My first tasting of the latest vintage. White floral and dried citrus peel aromas. Back label promises flavors of preserved lemon, key lime and thyme. Key lime was prominent with some herb (probably thyme) and tangerine pith. I’m not huge on preserved lemon but then I’m not all that familiar with it in dining, just a few Moroccan and Italian entrees I’ve had using it. So maybe it’s there; I just don’t picture it in my mind’s eye. There is a mineral and lactic-like finish with length in the citrus flavors. Some skin astringency as well, more becoming than not. I like the acidity level, forward but not overpowering. Great balance here overall. Always a pleasurable pour, this one, from vintage to vintage. — 2 months ago

I really need to see if this producer is still around. This is way better than I expected. Pop and pour it was ok. A bit thin but ok but sharp on the palate and I thought alright it is what it is. Started up the BBQ and came back 30-40min later and what a transformation. Comforting and soft and with a surprising amount of weight. I really didn’t think air was going to help here but it did. I’ve been excited to revisit Duncan Savage’s eponymous red from the 2018 vintage, which I last tried around four years ago having just shaken off a bout of Covid, senses struggling. Even then, it was clear how promising this wine was, and now, with a little more bottle age, it’s absolutely singing. It’s a pure, bright fruited 100% Syrah which has a tremendous savoury character, with a telltale bolt of iron on the nose. On the palate it has enormous structure, with sappy blood orange fruit and white pepper, and wonderful minerality. This is such an utterly drinkable wine, with more than enough in the tank for another decade or two. Wonderful stuff. — a year ago

Purple, moderate plus pigment extraction. Floral and cherry notes in nose, not sure about black olive as someone else noted, but some herbal and barrel toast notes, yes. Flavors of cherry peel and berry with depth and length. A hint of black pepper in aftertaste after its been open an hour. Restrained acidity and alcohol, soft mouthfeel, tannins largely missing in action but not needed, just inexpressive or well hidden. Not a typical wine producer which is what makes them special; Michael typically puts his own spin on the wines he makes. Good, but goes down a little harsh and with more sour and crunch than I remember since I first tried a couple years ago. Pours with a brick filter draped over dark crimson. Beefy bloody notes hanging around with magic marker upfront, then averages itself out with fruits and herbs and becomes altogether a vibrant lighter thing.
