Grenache 2014

This is Pinot, not Grenache. But could have mistaken it for Grenache. Smooth, cherries, pepper, low tannins. — 8 years ago

Vriesenhof Vineyards Swanesang Pinot Noir 2015

9.0

@Delectable Wine this is the 2015 Vriesenhof Vineyards Cape Winemakers Guild Swanesang Pinot Noir.

Our first time every at the Cape Winemakers Guild Auction and we will make sure to come back! (Tasting was on 9/28/18).

Twelfth wine at the Friday Auction Tasting for the Cape Winemakers Guild and the first red wine. This is made up of 100% Pinot Noir by Jan Coetzee from Stellenbosch. Aged for a total of twelve months prior to bottling. Only 47 cases produced with 36 being auctioned in 2018. Sadly this was Jan's last year as a member of the Guild as he has decided to retire.

Light to medium mix of garnet and ruby red in appearance. A touch stinky on the attack of the nose with some animal nuances, followed up by purple flowers and cherries. Medium plus acidity (7/10) and light plus to medium bodied. Layered palate with black cherries, leather, spices, touch of earth and some darker characteristics in the long finish. Drink till 2026.

$$$ - Tasted at the Cape Winemakers Auction and only sold as magnums. Average bid at auction was R4,565.00 ($107.39 a magnum) a case. Highest bid was R6,600.00 ($155.27 a magnum) and lowest bid was R3,600.00 ($84.69 a magnum).

Kallista Cabernet Franc Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot 2005

The color on this South African blend of Merlot, Cab Sauv and Cab Franc is a deep plum. On the nose is dark fruit, plum, black raspberries. On the palate is black raspberry, unripe plum, cassis, sandy tannins and a vegetal note. Not bad for a South African Bordeaux blend. — 11 years ago
