Burgundy Northern Satellites: Irancy & Saint-Bris

In his most recent article on Vinous Neal Martin reminds us, "as prices in the Côte d’Or become increasingly prohibitive, alternatives such as Irancy and Saint-Bris become increasingly worth investigating. Therefore, during my week in Chablis, I organized a blind tasting of Irancy wines with the BIVB and visited a couple of its more reputed vignerons. Instead of lumping them in with my report on Chablis, I chose to keep these producers separate in order to give them well-deserved limelight and not least because, despite their proximity, their wines are totally different to those of Chablis. The 2016 Irancy Fut de Chêne has a bright red cherry and cranberry bouquet with touches of pressed flowers - perhaps a hint of iris. The well-balanced palate offers a fine bead of acidity and gently gripping tannins, then delivers clean blackberry and wild strawberry fruit laced with brine toward the finish. Excellent. The palate is very well balanced, with a fine bead of acidity, and the finish conveys a simmering tension. Discreet stem ginger and white pepper notes are sprinkled liberally on the aftertaste. The 2015 Irancy Veaupessiot, aged entirely in demi-muids, has a very pure and detailed bouquet of black cherries, raspberry, hints of rose petal and fine mineralité, equal to a premier cru Côte d’Or Rouge. The medium-bodied palate offers supple tannin, perfectly pitched acidity and a pure, quite sensual finish that fans out with red cherries, raspberry and saline notes. Wonderful. The 2016 Irancy is 100% Pinot Noir. It was cropped at just 10hl/ha because of the frost and spent 14 months in Burgundy pièces. It has an attractive bouquet of confit-like red cherries, iodine and a touch of brown spice. The well-balanced palate presents sappy red berry fruit, fine but grippy tannin and a harmonious and quite persistent and fresh finish. This is a really impressive Irancy that does the AOC proud. The 2010 Irancy Palotte has a fresh, quite vibrant bouquet of red currant, cranberry and pressed flowers, followed by hints of orange peel and sage. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, a superb structure and a complex mixture of black and red fruit laced with clove, bay leaf, curry leaf and a touch of sage once again.
