Celebrating Riesling

“Alles zu seiner Zeit,” or, all in good time. Riesling has the power to reward patience with an incredible spectrum of aromas and flavors. With that in mind, we have selected several Rieslings from the Delectable community exhibit some of the qualities that have made these wines favorites among discerning wine drinkers. The celebration of Riesling continues at Rieslingfeier in New York on Saturday, January 27th. Of the 2017 edition, Vinous critic David Schildknecht commented that, "The most intriguing and exciting tasting opportunities, though, came once again thanks to Rieslings that were not only rare but also unusual." Be sure to share on Delectable your rare and unusual highlights from Rieslingfeier's Gala Dinner dinner, as well as delicious offerings from the 2016 vintage at the Gränd Tasting.

Nice spot, lots of acid, sugar and sulfur still, will probably drink well for many years to come. — 7 years ago

Neumagener Rosengärtchen Auslese Riesling 1999

It may be old but it's still kicking. Great harmony among the sugar, acid, and fruit. Not gonna get any better, but a great example of how balanced wine stays balanced over time. — 8 years ago

Sichel

Dürkheimer Feuerberg Trockenbeerenauslese Riesling 1990

Maybe the best sticky I’ve ever tasted...age-driven richness, smoky honey, so perfectly elevated and light while still driving honeysuckle and peach over the palate. Gift from the next table over! Lonnnng finish. — 7 years ago

Weingut Nik Weis

St. Urbans-Hof Leiwener Laurentiuslay Trockenbeerenauslese Riesling 1969

How to really stump someone in a blind tasting: 1) store a bottle of '69 Weis Leiwener Laurentiuslay Auslese in a box with lots of geuze for ages. 2) allow the wild yeast to enter the bottle and do its thing. 3) wait until you loose 1/4 of the wine through the cork as the pressure builds. 4) open under the table, with a serious 'pop' (to confuse the tasters). 5) serve this miraculously delicious sour 'petillant' (like a cross between a Belgian sour and a very good feinherbst) in riesling glasses. 6) bathe in the glorious confusion that ensues. — 7 years ago
