Cocktail Series: The Boulevardier

You’ve heard of the Negroni , which is a cocktail with a deep red hue made from Campari, Sweet vermouth, gin, and a perfectly twisted orange. But have you used your bartending skills to make the elixir known as the Negroni’s cousin? Are you looking for a bourbon cocktail that will keep you warm as the nights get cooler? Grab some bourbon and get ready to learn all about the Boulevardier. Contrary to common belief, it is said that the Boulevardier was created before the Negroni. To begin our Boulevardier journey, we’re headed back to Prohibition. Erskine Gwynne, an American writer living in Paris, claimed this bourbon-based drink as his signature cocktail. Gwynne was the editor for the monthly publication known as The Boulevardier, hence the beverage’s name. Similar to the Negroni, there are a wide variety of twists and turns on this classic beverage. You can add coffee, maybe a dash of honey, there are even variations out there that call for balsamic vinegar; however, if you want to impress your fellow cocktail drinkers, start with the basics. Gather your favorite bourbon, Campari and Sweet Vermouth. Oh, and don’t forget that orange twist. Happy drinking!

A few years ago I was in rural Spain looking for breakfast at 0700. No luck, but I did see a group of very fit bikers having vermouth for breakfast. After multiple drinks ( not shots) they road off on the steep roads. I was hungry.

Batch 3, Bottle 1181. One cube. Copper hues, cedar and spice aromas give way to corn syrup, maple stick and burnt cinnamon flavors. Medium length, smooth long finish with minimal bite. Performed far beyond expectations. I didn't sense any taste contribution from the fact that this was finished for 9 months in Groth Cab reserve oak barrels. Still, a damn good bourbon. — 8 years ago
