Music and Wine: August 2019

Welcome to Delectable's column, Music and Wine! If you’re on the lookout for newly released music, grab your headphones. If you’re searching for a fresh bottle, grab your glass. And if you’re looking for the perfect wine to pair with that pop song you can't stop playing on repeat, then sit back, relax, and enjoy these Delectable tunes. Each month, we will gather a playlist of newly released songs and pair them with wines that hit all the right notes. Listen on Spotify Now 1. Vulture, Vulture – Of Monsters and Men The album cover for Of Monsters and Men’s third album, Fever Dream, showcases a hot pink background with an eye staring off into the distance. The eye isn’t looking directly at the viewer, which conveys an air of introspection that is present in the sound and lyrics of the entire album. “Vulture, Vulture” is the fifth track on the album and describes an ominous feeling caused by the unnamed “He” who keeps this feeling ever present. Whether it’s the lyrics or the pickup of the chorus, this song makes us feel the need for wind blowing through our hair. We recommend you listen to the song while running or driving with the windows down and wind filling the car. Once you get to your destination, we think you should try a glass of Blanc de Blancs Champagne Chardonnay . An airy wine for a song that makes us feel weightless. 2. Champion – Bishop Briggs A powerhouse song for a powerhouse singer. Bishop Briggs’ distinctive voice is undeniably strong in her newest single, "Champion". The lyrics themselves are straightforward with a common theme found in various other movies and songs: if you fall down, get back up again. While the lyrical meaning is simplistic, her voice drives home the message and makes you feel like you really are a champion. We suggest you grab a Barolo and fight your way through whatever life is throwing at you! 3. That Was Yesterday – Leon Bridges Leon Bridges is back with his first release since his 2018 album, Good Thing. The title itself indicates that there will be at least a small amount of nostalgia present in this song. Bridges sings about life “yesterday” before all the fame and life “today” after gaining fame and the changes that brings. A melancholic air haunts the background of the song, but it does not leave the listener feeling sad. This song captures the bittersweet feeling that comes with nostalgia and remembering. Don’t forget where you come from but look forward to all the future has to offer. Think of the past and look towards the future with a glass of Kentucky Bourbon Whiskey . 4. Neon – Lykke Li In case you were wondering, Lykke Li is “still sad still sexy” in her follow up EP to 2018’s so sad so sexy album. One of the standout songs, “Neon” retains the similar electro beats bordering R&B with lush vocals and sad-pop lyrics that Lykke Li established so well with her last album. Apparently the song didn’t quite make it onto so sad so sexy, which seems surprising given how powerful it is in its subtlety. The melody is swimming in a moody paradise that begs the listener to take a moment and reflect on their own heated affairs that never made it past the moon’s light. We’d pair this gloomy tune with an Old World Syrah , one that hits you before it slides into an acidic and velvety finish, which seems only fitting. 5. Once – Liam Gallagher Former Oasis member, Liam Gallagher is gearing up to release his second solo album in September 2019. In the meantime, he has released three songs off the upcoming album. “Once” embodies that moment during a concert where the singer says, “we’re going to slow it down a bit.” The singer then proceeds to grab a stool, their acoustic guitar, and the atmosphere changes from upbeat concert to a more personal environment where the audience sways and sings along. This song makes us want to grab our own guitar and strum a few chords. After our guitar lesson, we’d like to grab a bottle of Cabernet Franc-Merlot blend . Gallagher sings, “You went down so easy like a glass of wine, my friend.” What could better than this smooth red to match? 6. U KNOW – WILLOW (feat. Jaden) No stranger to the spotlight, Willow Smith’s latest 8-track album is a far departure from her “Whip My Hair” single released when she was only 10 years old. Now 18, Smith transports us to worlds far away from the pop standards and dives into exploratory sounds. Willow takes us to the astral plane, and we are only brought back to earth when her brother, Jaden comes in with a verse. If you can recall that feeling of realizing you were daydreaming in the middle of class, then you can understand the type of trance this song induces. We think you should sip on a dry rosé blend . The pink hues will accompany you to the astral plane along with his song. 7. Everything Is Broken – Sheryl Crow (feat. Jason Isabell) Sheryl Crow’s latest album, Threads, is set to release August 30; however, she is giving fans a little taste by releasing different songs on the album. An album of features, Crow enlists a number of fellow big names, such as Stevie Nicks and Johnny Cash, to join her on each track. Her most recent release features Jason Isabell and is a cover of Bob Dylan’s song that was originally release in 1989. Packed with guitar runs and an upbeat tempo, this cover fits right in with rest the album’s vibe. Dylan’s lyric, “broken threads” matches perfectly with the title of Crow’s album. This fun duet cover would be best listened to outside on a warm summer evening with a large group of friends and drinks in hand. We recommend you sip on a sour beer for this warm occasion. 8. FOREVER ANYWAY – Ryan Ashley "FOREVER ANYWAY" is the first song off of North London singer/songwriter Ryan Ashley’s recently released EP. This song perfectly captures that Monday mood. Anyone else want to throw their alarm at the wall at the beginning of every week? Besides this relatable beginning verse, the rest of the song explores the all too common pressure to go, go, go and work constantly to use all the time the day has to offer. Ashley promises to get himself together one day, but that day is not today. Once again, a Monday mood. Grab a bottle of Mosel Riesling and put off those chores for another day. Poached pear and brown sugar, baked apple with cloves, cinnamon, black tea, orange peel, sage, red hots, grilled corn husk, tamarind, nutmeg and yam lead you into the glass. Big rosemary-sage entry and dark caramel release the heat beast of cinnamon, cedar, ginger, stemmy pepper, lemon oil, cherry, pine resin, smoke, tobacco leaf burn, and a pleasant vanilla-Pecan finish that leaves a dry, satisfying sensation. Wild, hot rocket through the centuries to a smoldering hilltop and a fine clogging replete with déjà-vu. — 5 years ago

Boundary Breaks Vineyard

Finger Lakes Dry Rose Blend 2018

On the Lawn at Tanglewood this afternoon with the Boston Pops Orchestra. Our conductors are David Newman and John Williams are leading a diverse program of cinematic works composed by John Williams entitled "Across The Stars: Music Of John Williams". We'll enjoy pieces from Star Wars (various episodes), Harry Potter, E.T., Memoirs of a Geisha and many others. All works to feature the violin virtuoso, Anne-Sophie Mutter, a personal favorite soloist of ours on these hallowed grounds. Mr. Williams has rearranged many of the selections today to better feature Ms. Mutter, an exciting afternoon will lay ahead. 🎼🎻

Nose has mashed strawberry/banana and cut red delicious apple.

Palate has sweet strawberry, banana peel, ripe red currant and light green herb notes.

The wine is 100% DeChaunac, a more common varietal for colder climates, like Ontario; fruit is sourced locally (FLX region) from Sheldrake Point.

The 2018 may just be the finest version of this wine to date, so juicy and expressive on the palate, just beautiful for this warm afternoon.
