Essential Tips for Valentine's Day Wines

As wine is best shared, and there is no better time to do so than on February 14th with your beloved. Choosing the perfect Valentine’s Day wine can be surprisingly tricky. The perfect bottle can complement and elevate the evening with your loved one. Here are four tips to help you choose the perfect bottle: 1. Shared memories: Did you and your loved one go on a romantic trip where you shared a bottle of wine? Was one of your wedding wines particularly noteworthy? Wine is sensory, and the senses, especially aromas, can trigger powerful memories. You can recapture the moment by finding a bottle of wine that references wonderful shared memories. 2. Pink fun: It might be a cliché to drink a rosé on Valentine’s Day, amid the inevitable sea of pink cuteness flowing from every store. But there’s absolutely nothing wrong with a bit of pink when done well. Many of the world’s greatest Champagnes are pink, so there are plenty of options out there for a rose-tinted evening. 3. Sparklers: Whatever the shade, whether rosé or otherwise, there is something romantic about sharing a bottle of bubbles. If you are leaning towards drinking high quality Champagne, then embrace its aromatic complexity by dropping constricting flutes in favor of a classic white wine glass. The aromas will blossom, as will your love. 4. Food for thought: There is little better than a successful food and wine combination, and the same goes for Valentine’s Day. For that romantic Thai meal consider a slightly off dry Riesling, which has acidity and sweetness to cut through the spice. Sushi lovers will have their meal elevated with Champagne or a zesty white, like an Albariño or Grüner Veltliner. In short, think about your Romantic meal and plan the wines accordingly to achieve that perfect pairing.

I can’t believe I forgot to rate this!! The color is extraordinary. So bright and full of sun. It is cloudy and has a very creamy body. Lemon, lime, white pepper, arugula, lees. Delicious. — 6 years ago

Do Ferreiro

Rías Baixas Albariño 2014

Softer initially, perhaps do to that age. Claims of 200 year old vines on the property. Damp climate, organic farming, indigenous yeasts. That combo ain't easy. — 8 years ago

Bernard Magrez

Villa Ruby Caresse de Rosé 2016

Yum!!! Great rose. Slightly sweet but great with our spicy thai. This unique blend is 50 % muscat, 24% merlot, 19% Grenache, 7 % Cinault! Great blend. I actually hate straight Muscat’s. 11.5 percent alcohol, leaving the impression that there is almost no residual sugar left. I am not a really big fan of a wine that is slightly sweet, even at .5 %. . But this wine works. And I will buy more. Fantastic rose!!!!!!! — 6 years ago

Jacquesson & Fils

Cuvée No. 739 Extra Brut Champagne Blend

At champagne bar in Gothenburg, this Jacquesson beat the Vouet & Sorbee by a mile; not surprisingly I guess. Base year is 2011, all three main grapes but mostly chardonnay; fermented and aged in foudres; unfiltered bottled, and disgorged in 2014. Rich, waxy, honey, stone fruit, minerals and a supple finish. — 6 years ago

Bourbon Barrel Aged California Cabernet Sauvignon 2016

Bitch, I’m back!!! Finally got to buy wine after being furloughed for a month. Decided to go with a familiar winemaker although I’ve never had the bourbon barrel aged Cabernet Sauvignon. Wow, was i pleased. Before I let it aerate to develop the flavors a chalkiness rested on my tongue for the finish. After letting it open up, blackberry and black currant flavors hit me. This is a juicy teddy jam, but not sweet at all. I definitely tasted the oak barrel making it rich and deep. The finish coats your mouth like your favorite winter blanket. I think I found my Valentine! — 6 years ago

Château Calon-Ségur

Le Marquis Saint-Estèphe Red Bordeaux Blend 2015

This second wine of the property uses both older and younger vines and lots of merlot (though this will change over time). 30% new oak for 17 months
Medium ruby with a lovely bit of blueberry, blackberry and cassis on the nose. Some well-balanced oak on the palate. and a lovely long finish. Quite soft and elegant, with just enough tannin to give it structure and a bit of spice
