Mount Eden Vineyards

Santa Cruz Mountains Chardonnay 2013

Paul J
9.8

One of the best whites I’ve ever had! Dark gold color. Deep nose of butter and nuts. Extremely complex but well balanced. Butter, cream, pineapple, and camomile. Long finish. Absolutely fantastic! — 4 years ago

Empire Estate

Finger Lakes Dry Riesling 2016

Outstanding vintage of this extremely consistent FLX Riesling! Very mineral and chalk driven. Lots of petrol on the nose. Green apple and stone fruit but much more organic on the pallet. Just a hint of white flowers. Bracing acidity. Very Germanic! — 4 years ago

Empire Estates is a collaboration between Thomas Pastuszak, Wine Director at Nomad in Manhattan (a big proponent of FLX wines) and Kelby James Russell, winemaker at Red Newt Cellars. I believe these were originally developed for restaurant distribution only. I have never seen Empire Estates wines on my visits to Red Newt. Understand your concern. If you are in the Finger Lakes, Ryan’s Wine and Spirits in Canandaigua carries their wines (along with a large selection of other FLX bottles).

Thanks! That is fantastic insight. I did buy Kelby James Russel wines at Red Newt this summer. He is a good winemaker. I will definitely search it out. Does Northside in Ithaca have it do you know?

No worries! I have seen EE wines at Northside (Good Wine Shop) in Ithaca.

Paolo Scavino

Bricco Ambrogio Barolo Nebbiolo 2015

The most approachable of the Scavino tasting we enjoyed last spring. Sweet plum; leather, dusty cherries, youthful tannic astringency. Hold for 5 years at least. — 4 years ago

Domaine Faury

Collines Rhodaniennes Syrah 2018

Nice little wine..it has been awhile since I have had a Syrah! Recommended to me as a simple wine to pair with food. Although very young this Northern Rhone wine is delicious presenting with raspberries..violets...earth...and a bit of bacon fat as it opens. QPR is decent at $19...worth getting a few more and see how they age! — 4 years ago

Spottswoode

Family Estate Grown St. Helena Cabernet Sauvignon 2016

The 2016 ‘Estate’ Cabernet Sauvignon is a stunning blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Cabernet Franc, with 6% Petit Verdot. Needing a one hour decant to fully awaken, the 2016 ‘Estate’ Cabernet Sauvignon slowly unveils deep Turkish coffee, creme de cassis, cocoa powder and sweet pipe tobacco aromas with lighter suggestions of blueberry pie and graphite that all meld in the glass. The palate is dense and powerful yet shows a wonderful restraint and vibrant sense of tension that runs through the core of the wine. Moderate tannins frame the dense dark currant jelly, mocha, black tea, anise, exotic spice and herbal undertones round out this expressive palate. Fantastic and literally thrilling in its youth, the 2016 ‘Estate’ Cabernet Sauvignon will provide drinking enjoyment for the next two plus decades. Drink 2020-2040- 96 — 4 years ago
