Wine Situation Final Five

The Wine Situation hosts everyone from winemakers to writers to find out what a person’s situation is…with wine. At the end of each episode, host Ellen Clifford wants to know the basics of her guests’ final thoughts on wine, drink and food. This month Ellen talks with Kristie Tacey, winemaker at Tessier about wine, her life in science, and the music that goes with her bottlings! Edited for length, full episode here QUESTION ONE Ellen: Question number one, whatcha drinking? Kristie: I just got back from Alsace and am so into skin-contact Gewurztraminer . And skin-contact Sylvaner . QUESTION TWO Ellen: Question number two, whatcha listening to? Kristie: I was just listening to the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. I love that new album so much. I regularly listen to Big Thief, and I’m going to see them at the Greek Theatre in August which I’m super excited about. I just saw Neal Young. I’ve been going back and listening to Neal Young’s albums. QUESTION THREE Ellen: Question number three, what’s a favorite pairing? Kristie: I love fried chicken and Riesling . I make a Riesling. I love California dried Riesling, with skin contact too. That would be my jam. QUESTION FOUR Ellen: When not drinking wine, what are your favorite beverages? Kristie: I love LaCroix, watermelon, strawberry… and then the Waterloo Black Cherry. And then I love classic cocktails. Sazeracs, Manhattans, actually, I love the Brooklyn more. It’s dry vermouth instead of sweet. QUESTION FIVE Ellen: Question number five, what’s bringing you joy? Kristie: Hiking in Tilden. I live right by Tilden Park. I’ll see cool new birds, or we also have our agave plant. It’s starting to flower and it’s made this 10-foot asparagus-looking thing and now flowers are growing out of it. Every day I come out to observe it. *** You can find Kristie’s wine here for both where to source the wines and to listen to the music that pairs with them as well as Kristie’s DJ sets on KXSF, and links to attend their upcoming release party in August. Gentil Alsace Sylvaner Blend 2019

So this is a good story! It’s too hot to go outside for one so I decided to open a wine I haven’t had yet and pair it with some cheese for an afternoon snack. A double Gloucester with onion & chive cheese, a garlic & herb BellaVitano and a soft dill Havarti and of course I love Castelvetrano olives! So… I send this picture to my brother, knowing that he is in France right now and I’m not usually a French wine drinker, and where do you suppose he is? In Alsace!! Needless to say I scored some points with him and am enjoying a new French wine! Thanks Alex!! Oops I forgot, this wine is made up from the Noble grapes of Alsace; Gewürztraminer, Pinot Gris, Riesling and Muscat. And… the story goes on….while reading a historical fiction about The Women of Chateau Lafayette. — a year ago

Domaine Zind Humbrecht

Clos St. Urbain Rangen de Thann Gewürztraminer 2000

This is lovely. Deep amber in color. The nose is great- tea, spices, a touch of sherry, roses, orange rind, dried flowers. Lovely texture- glycerin and a beautiful balance of sweetness with acidity. Lovely — 2 years ago

Lovely creme brulee aspect with emphasis on the brulee part. VT does not have to be sweet and doesn't have to have botrytis, and this was a good example as it wasn't too cloying at all and had good lift.

Saralee's Vineyard Pinot Noir 2018

Strawberries, cloves and hints of mint blossom in the glass. It's soft and enveloping with violet-tinged wild berry fruits and florals. A core of zesty acids bring lively energy, maintaining an energetic feel throughout and making this a perfect pairing at the dinner table. — 4 years ago
