Egon Mauer was for a long period the cellar master of the State Domaine in Eltville, the largest fine wine estate in Germany.
This #1976, from the great #EltvillerSonnenberg vineyard, was so beautifully balanced and drinkable that you wanted sip after sip and glass after glass... an endless flavor profile of apricots, pinapple and crême brulée... complex, spicy aromatic due to ample #botrytis but not a jot of bitterness... utter perfection! #EgonMauer #Riesling #Rheingau — 10 years ago
Not a birth year for me, but it was the year I was conceived. Perfectly stored at this mecca for Spanish wine, this was fresh as a daisy!
A garnet core with deep brick color intensity and lighter rose-orange at the edges.
The nose revealed with ease, and deeper with oscillation, the forest floor you expect, with mint, tobacco, cigar box, dried flower petals and mature red cherry and plum. The palate continued this attack, but without the mint. The flavors fanned out on the palate with an elegant, but unwavering persistence, adding tea and a very subtle iron component.
The acidity was pitch perfect, with silky and mature tannins that seemed to always be just the right amount of structure. A fantastic tasting experience and one I will not forget. #1976 #CVNE #rioja #tempranillo — 10 years ago
#Rieslings from the #Rheingau region produced in the legendary #1976 vintage are still going strong as was recently proven by this little bundle of joy from a half bottle, no less--that's the good news--sadly this estate closed its doors following the '96 vintage, which makes treasures like this lovely Kiedricher Wasserrose #Beerenauslese all the more precious! #goldkapsel

Not sure how this is going to taste but since it's the 40th Anniversary of the #JudgementOfParis it's gonna get popped tonight. I'm predicting the StagsLeapWineCellars will win (again). #1976 #FortyYears — 9 years ago
