1959 Auslese for how much?! There is something truly unique and precious about a wine that has never left its place of origin... it's what some call provenance.
This now defunct #Rheingau estate was at this time on top of its game and produced some of the finest #Rieslings from #GrandCru vineyard sites in #Eltville and #Kiedrich. Eltviller #Kalbspflicht Riesling #Auslese from Jacob Fischer Erben was so fresh and lively that the closet guess was 1976!
Where else can you find such a phenomenal wine from an awesome year that is pushing 60 years of age for $250 in a restaurant???
NOWHERE!!! #JacobFischerErben #GermanWine #Rieslinglover — 10 years ago
#Rieslings from the #Rheingau region produced in the legendary #1976 vintage are still going strong as was recently proven by this little bundle of joy from a half bottle, no less--that's the good news--sadly this estate closed its doors following the '96 vintage, which makes treasures like this lovely Kiedricher Wasserrose #Beerenauslese all the more precious! #goldkapsel

Talk about " closet vintages"...2004s are rarely mentioned in discussions of great German vintages over the past 15-20 years, but people are really missing the boat.
The'04s are classic #Mosel #Rieslings with awesome balance and structure, together with ideal acidity levels for long term aging.
Cooler weather vintages such as #2004, which produce wines of greater restraint and less opulence, are less and less common with the onset of global warming, but they are the ones that true Riesling freaks covet most highly--this #Prälat was totally mind blowing!!! #Loosen #ErdenerPrälat #Auslese — 11 years ago
#2002s were generally overshadowed by the international press in favor of the 2001s, which, in themselves, were indeed lovely #Mosel #Rieslings. However, as time goes by, it's becoming more and more obvious that the the tables have turned now that some of the baby fat has been assimilated into what have turned out to be utterly beautiful examples of what Mosel Rieslings are all about: finesse, elegance, minerality & harmony!
I could drink this all day until the cows come home and still want more! #2002 #ÜrzigerWürzgarten #spätlese #Loosen — 11 years ago
One of the best #Austrian #Rieslings I have ever tried. But hey...it is only day 1 of the trip! :-) To me, this wine is like a bridge between Alsatian and Model Rieslings. Crisp, dry, juicy fruits with petrol notes. Truly a beautiful wine. — 11 years ago
This gorgeous wine was flat out AWESOME!!!
I've always liked this vintage and #Weil nailed it was classic examples of balanced #Rieslings from a big ripe, but not too ripe, vintage. This #KiedrichTurmberg was so perfectly integrated between acidity and sweetness that it never came off as top-heavy or cloying in the least--this is AMBROSIA!!! #2009 #RobertWeil #Rheingau #Rieslinglover

#2009 was a spectacular year for #dry #German #Rieslings and the #Spreitzer brothers made an #OestricherLenchen that lives up to this vintage's reputation. Creamy, silky, mouth-coating concentration with a fine core of ripe acidity to support its innate opulence--well done! #erstegewachs #GG #Rheingau — 10 years ago
Go ahead and tell me about how overstated, unbalanced and atypical #German #Rieslings from the #2003 vintage can be...after you try this amazing effort from one of their finest producers you'll have egg all over your face! #Keller #Hubacker #spätlese #Rheinhessen — 11 years ago

A bottle from the old days when terms such as "#feine", "#feinste", "#hochfeine" etc. were used to describe greater levels of sweetness and concentration in #German #Rieslings. However, in the wake of the 1971 German wine law, producers have replaced such nomenclature with #Goldkapsel, #Weissgold, #LangeGoldkapsel etc. as well as the equally confusing, non-standardized star system to indicate gradations of sweetness. I like the old system, but I can also read German so the new system in ultimately easier for consumers who cannot understand the language. Either way, the answer is in the bottle and this #1966 recently rocked our Riesling World in LA! #Loosen #ErdenerPrälat — 11 years ago
One of my favorite Austrian wine producers! Fantastic #Rieslings and Gruners! — 11 years ago

An absolute beauty for those preferring the slightly sweeter side of #Kabinett #Rieslings. — 11 years ago
The #German #dry wine industry has learned a lot in the past two decades and one aspect is how to deal with #Rieslings innately high acidity. #1997 was a very fine year throughout the various regions, but this is drying out and was clearly not intended for long-term aging in excess of 10 years.
It made a decent partner to food, but not as a straight sipping wine. A modest amount of residual sugar would have created a more balanced wine. #LangwerthvonSimmern #RauenthalerRothenberg #Riesling #Kabinett #Rheingau — 10 years ago
Here we have one of the very finest #Rheingau estates, which is consistently producing pristine #Rieslings and doing so by 100% #organic/#biodynamic farming methods. This #2012 #OestrichLenchen #Auslese #Goldkapsel is a marvel of richness and structure... an impressive array of ripe flavors enhanced with delicate amounts of #botrytis that stood up beautifully next to our chocolate/rhubarb #dessert! — 10 years ago

#1993s were, across the board, perfectly-focused, jewel-like #Rieslings, and the #Saar region made particularly beautiful wines.
#EgonMüller makes a habit of excellence and this lovely #Spätese disappeared very quickly from all of our glasses! — 11 years ago
A fond farewell to the 20th century--1999s came on like gangbusters at first, but were also rather clumsy, clunky #Rieslings when they first hit the market in 2000. However, patience and plenty of #bottleaging have spawned some real gems and this #Loosen #Prälat knocked our socks off!
Don't rush to drink it all up--it's got loads of life ahead of it! #1999 #ErdenerPrälat #Auslese — 11 years ago
For those of you who think that #Rieslings don't #age unless they come from big, ripe years such as '76 or '83, here's proof positive that they damn well do!
Here is a wine that has that thing the #Moselaner call, "#Trinkfluss"...a wine you can drink rivers of...and still walk home! #1973 #ÜrzigerWürzgarten #spätlese — 11 years ago
Cerebral #wine from the #Mosel's pioneer of organic farming (going back to 1984) #Busch lets his wines create their own destinies by allowing them to ferment freely with long periods on the lees, giving these unique #Rieslings profound complexity and exotic aromas. — 11 years ago

Fred #Prinz' attractive #Rheingau #Rieslings inevitably say "pear extract" to me. They also have a mineral floral aspect that gives them a racy complexity and they are consistently well-structured, allowing them to age for decades. This #2007 was an unmitigated triumph for him and one that after nearly a decade has blossomed into a gorgeous #Riesling! #spätlese — 10 years ago
