17 year old Grand Reserva Rioja for 20 dollars. How do you do it K&L? Anyways, I drank this a few years back and it was a bit fresher and more alive then, but it’s still drinking well today. Lots of dusty cedar and that wonderfully polarizing American oak spice forms the basis of wine’s structure and tannin. There’s great acidity here too. Jamaica allspice submerged in black cherry, black raisin, African violets, red roses, cooked poppyseed, grilled, wine marinated steak with rosemary garnish. The palate is silky with medium mouthfeel and stealthy tannic hooks are whisked away like burrs and prickles on a satin sock. Sweet Connecticut wrap of tobacco is assisted by a minute mocha and black peppercorn. This took a while to open, surprisingly, but well worth the wait!

One of the best examples of large scale wine production at an ultra-high quality level. DP always brings it and we caught this one in a great place right now tasting like a Grand Cru White Burgundy. Rich and layered, with a long and fresh finish. It still retains excellent bubbles at 17 years of age. Dark chocolate, cocoa, cherry, plum, cedar with peppery notes. Slightly oxdized with a funky nose at first. Cabernet Franc contributes to this rounded softness.

Black cherry and plum tart emerging through aromas of violets dotting brown breads, shiitake and black oak. Cinnamon, cedar and clove coalesce. Raspberry reduction with currants. Hints of mints. Tart cherry palate brings cherry reduction and black currants, tons of dark cedar wrapped cigar, tart blackberry, peppercorn and cinnamon stick. Green notes suggest this is still young and half-blossomed despite the quarter century. Grainy tannins, though rounded.
