Old Forester

100 Proof Kentucky Straight Rye Whisky

Jk the cap is on do not attempt a chug. Not fancy but quite tasty. A step above “just a blender” and a step below “too good to mix”. The nose brings golden syrup and pleasant play dough and a pinch of allspice and orange peel. The palate is smooth and surprisingly light bodied upfront but finishes mouth-coating. Spicier and more vanilla in the mouth. Black pepper percolates through it all. It’s a little guilty pleasure tv where you know some geniuses made the entertainment value high but you know it isn’t like, prestige tv, but also you are gonna drink this and enjoy the f*#k out of it. — 10 months ago

Rivesaltes Ambré Hors d'Âge 6 Ans Vin Doux Naturel Grenache Blend

At risk of sounding weird, which obvi I’m gonna take because I am weird, this wine feels like an after school snack. So much golden raisins, dried orange peel and graham cracker. In elementary school I always hated golden raisins and got embarrassed in I ended up with raisins of any sort in my lunch because it seemed to scream NERD (and my friend Eliza told me they reminded her of cockroaches). Well F*#k peer pressure to be cool, which includes both snacking on dried fruits and adoring sweet wine. It’s not unctuous but is rich but not cloying. It does have those dried fruit and graham cracker after school notes plus some citrus and mayhaps there’s even a hazelnut and acacia blossom nearby? Pairs with mincemeat pie. — 3 years ago

Napa Valley Sauvignon Blanc 2012

My third bottle in as many weeks. Was hoping to save some but you know how that goes. My new favorite Sauv Blanc. It's got a great citrus/creamy combo palate that gets me every time. — 8 years ago

Oppenheimer Sackträger Beerenauslese Riesling 1975

F&#K YES. Ultra stoked to be drinking some older wine, especially when it’s a 40+ year old Beerenauslese Riesling, which has been impeccably stored by my buddy Pat since he bought it in the 70’s. Not sure if it was an expensive bottle back then, but it’s damn glorious today. On the nose, there’s a ton of honey, golden raisin and tiny little accent of balsamic (in a good way). Having aged this long, all the sugars and acid have melded and broken down into each other, and it’s not too sweet, but shows good fruit character. There’s some nuttiness but not oxidized really. I get ultra excited about old wine, and this was awesome.

It makes me want to lay down some of my own wine, but of course I always drink it too soon!

Light garnet color. Sour cherries, sous bois and spice on the mesmerizing nose. Glides on the palate, with the spice and candy lasting forever in the mouth. Delicious. — 5 years ago

Gran Reserva Rioja Tempranillo 1999

17 year old Grand Reserva Rioja for 20 dollars. How do you do it K&L? Anyways, I drank this a few years back and it was a bit fresher and more alive then, but it’s still drinking well today. Lots of dusty cedar and that wonderfully polarizing American oak spice forms the basis of wine’s structure and tannin. There’s great acidity here too. Not the greatest wine in the world, but definitely a fantastic value considering its age. #1999 #K&L #Value — 9 years ago
