Astounding nose full of tar and rose water, needed an hour to come out and play. Palate full of old cherry and leathery, earthy dark red fruit, dried mushroom. Mellowed completely by age with melted tannins and the sense of bricked spicy fruit around the edges. Just lovely, with enough acidity left to keep it all together. Was really singing at room temp.

This was wonderfully expressive and showing beautifully for its youth. In fact, this may be one of the most opened, balanced and expressive 2001 Barolo that I’ve had in recent memory. The nose was vibrant, yet haunting all at once, showing dark soil, balsamic, mushroom, savory herbs and dried cherry. On the palate, it displayed rich textures which were quickly firmed up by youthful tannin, with flavors of dried strawberry and cherry, inner floral tones, tobacco and spice. It finished with a youthful tug of tannin yet remained fresh and vibrant in its fruits. Hints of rose and tobacco lingered long.

Delicious. I preferred the freshness & tension upon opening but open for business towards the end. Masculine wine but still charming. Classic Castiglione.

Dynamite palate that is rich with red fruit, focused with earth and floral tones, bright with precise acidity and focused with taut, juicy tannins. Just starting to show secondary character and should be at it best in 3 to 19 years from today.

Jan 28th, 2017This wine is still youthful with a muted nose of plum, tar, violets and black cherry. The palate displays excellent depth with firm but ripe tannins supported by plum and black raspberry fruit. Deep, powerful and rich on the finish. I believe this will develop nice complexity with further aging.
