Azelia Barolos at VinItaly! Back from Verona and what a really great experience. Really enjoyed meeting Lorenzo & his father Luigi from Azelia. Their wines reflect great passion, focused craftsmanship & pure elegance. Here are two of their outstanding Barolo wines I had the great pleasure of tasting with them. Fantastic nose. Impeccable balance. Awesome fruit. This is Nebbiolo at its best! These wines were simply amazing. Cheers🍷 — 4 years ago
The aroma is similar to Azelia, authentic and pure, but missing some bass components. It even shows some natural wine tendencies, slightly volatile and gassy, which settles down quickly. The structure lacks the authority and the weight but it scores high in transparency and dynamics. It will not challenge the supremacy of Conternos, Mascarellos and Odderos because its aroma is less complex and powerful, but its structure is built on radically different geometry, which makes it very exciting. There is also a Burgundian sense of mastery of texture, and distinctiveness of aroma that separates it from more pedestrian Barolo’s. Also worth noting that while it shows the authentic character of Barolo it does not forego a strong individuality of the winemaker. — 5 years ago
Popped and poured into a bota bag; poured into chalices and free-poured into mouths as I played the role of Dionysus at a Greek god themed dance party. The 2022 pours a deep ruby/purple color with a near opaque core; medium viscosity with moderate staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is developing with notes of primary black and blue fruits, mixed florals, anise and minerals. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium tannin and medium acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is medium. I love the fresh, crunchy fruit. A perfect wine for revelry! Drink now through 2030. — 2 days ago
Barolo is a struggle to drink young. It needs many year to flush itself out.
This enters round, pleasant and like most young Italian reds falls onto wood plank.
Dry dark cherries, lean blackberries, fresh rhubarb, some dry strawberries, tarriness, meaty tannins, dry tobacco, fresh leather, wood barrel shavings, some anise, understated dark spice, hints of nutmeg, dry, red, dark flowers, nice acidity, well structured, tensioned, balanced and a woody ending.
I would not open this for 15-20 years for its better self, which raises its rating 2-3 points. Still in a primary stage. — 2 years ago
One of the better Italian wines I’ve had. 30+ minute decant. Almost maroon in color with brown edges. Nose had firewood and new plastic on it. Wine had bricking and was dominated by caramel and honey, with some plum and blackberry elements. Medium finish. High OH. — 6 years ago
2016 vintage.
From 2 plots in Castiglione Falletto and 5 plots in Serralunga d’Alba. Vines are 50 years old.
Cherries, black licorice and smoke on the nose.
Wild cherries, laurel leaf, dried flowers, mineral and savoury.
The purity of fruit is incredible.
Smooth and round tannins with a juiciness on the finish. — 24 days ago
Haven’t had much from Azelia which is why I was curious. A solid langhe Nebbiolo, especially at $23 in today’s world. Definitely on the lighter side, but still good fruit and acid with a whisper of tannin. Nice with pork chops, especially with a slight chill — 7 months ago

Fascinating to drink next to its Azelia vintage vineyard-mate, the Scavino was shy on the nose even after an hour. Some tar, sour cherry came through, and preceded a deeply powerful core of black tea, loamy dark cherry and Grand Cru Burgundy essence of vinous power. 45 second length, not a hard edge to be found...this may last years but can’t imagine how it will improve. Phenomenal. — 7 years ago

Popped and poured; enjoyed over the course of two days. Day 1 took a couple of hours to really start showing its best (though the quality was obvious). Day 2, it was much more open. The 2021 Margheria pours a garnet color with a transparent core; medium+ viscosity with no staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is developing with gorgeous notes of fresh raspberries, tiny forest strawberries, Morello cherry (especially on Day 2), tar, rosebushes, fresh sage, talcum powder and dry gravelly earth. On the palate, the wine is bone dry with high tannin and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose; the fruit showed more ripeness on Day 2. The finish is long, loaded with minerals and very savory! Considering the amount of air this enjoyed, I expect a long life of enjoyment. You can drink now with patience but this will be better after 2031 and through 2061+ — 2 days ago
