May 28th, 2018Pale to medium ruby. A shy nose with some florals and with air, pastille cherry and herbs. A little sweeter than the 2012 Benanti Contessa we had 2 days ago. Light to medium bodied with sandy minerally tannins.

This is an outstanding wine from Etna Rosso. It has a lucid ruby brick color with perfumes of black tar, rose petals, and a cool mossy tarp covering black berries. Light, but sneaky tannins and still elegant - like Etna’s answer to Nebbiolo. The texture is seriously velvety, medium bodied, with lots of acid. A firm structure built on volcanic minerality, balanced fruit, and well integrated acidity. For $25 this wine drinks at twice it’s value in Piedmont.

Well-balanced and restrained entry-level wine from one of the great producers of a highly underrated region. Pinot Noir-like finesse and elegance. It needed time to open up and reveal its aromatics but was worth the wait. Dried rose petals, cherry, pomegranate and blood orange with a hint of old iron coming through. Subtle flinty minerality showing unique volcanic terroir. The fruit is slightly saline on the mid palate and echoes the blood orange aroma with a certain pithiness while mint and herbal components show up on the finish. Slow-building tannins and mouth-coating acid structure. Rustic wine with a beautiful minerality.

Beautiful light red color in the glass. Spices, cherries and a slight musk fill the nose. On the palate you’re initially hit with freshly shaved graphite, a punch of tart cherry juice and a hint of licorice. Mid palate and finish remind me of the fresh cranberry sauce I like to make for Thanksgiving dinner... acidic and tart but just the right amount of sweetness to balance everything out. Volcanic soil gives this wine quite a grippy texture with a fairly tannic finish. Nerello Mascalese dominant wines have been a favorite of mine over the last year, and this bottle is up there as one of my favorites for the money. This bottle particularly tastes almost like a cross of Nebbiolo and Pinot Noir. Pronounced tannic structure of a Nebbiolo but the mystical gracefulness of a nice light bodied Pinot.
