Charles Krug
Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
Time for my Friday's Cabernet fix. Here's a nice Napa Cab.
Dark ruby in color with a purplish rim.
Fruity nose of blueberries, cherries, plums, vanilla, oak, licorice, cloves, spices, vegetables, vinaigrette, tobacco, cola, graphite and peppercorn.
Medium plus in body with high acidity and great legs.
Dry on the palate with raspberries, cherries, currants, oak, vanilla, cloves, licorice, tobacco, herbs, vegetables, spices and peppercorn.
Medium plus in finish with firm, green tannins and tangy raspberries.
This is a very enjoyable Napa Cabernet. Not fully balanced yet, but showing nice complexity and a great mouthfeel.
Needs a couple of hours to open up properly, which I did not have. I had it at a restaurant, and between happy hour and dinner, it finished way too quickly...
Will be better in 3 to 7 years.
A good food wine, and I paired it with steak and grilled vegetables.
James Suckling 91 points.
A blend of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Petit Verdot and 1% Merlot.
14.7% alcohol by volume.
88 points.
$25.

Here's my Friday's Cabernet fix for you.
Pretty color of dark ruby with a short purple rim.
Fruity nose blackberries, black currants, cedar, earth, vanilla, sour cherries, licorice, leather, spices, chocolates, tobacco, light vegetables and black pepper.
Medium plus in body and soft with medium acidity and long legs.
Dry and fruity on the palate with currants, sweet cherries, blackberries, earth, wood, licorice, vanilla, cloves, tobacco, coffee, chocolates, peppercorn and spices.
Medium plus on the finish with round tannins and tangy raspberries.
This Napa Cabernet is very enjoyable already, although still young. Well balanced with nice complexity and mouthfeel. Feels like a Napa Bordeaux style red.
I've had this vintage before, and it doesn't have good consistency. This time it's much better than other times. Maybe it's the company...
Good right out of the bottle and needs 90 minutes to open up properly. Would age nicely in the next 5 to 7 years.
Good by itself or with food. I paired it with beef burgers.
14.7% alcohol by volume.
$22.

Had this a year an half ago, Wow did this develop nicely! Est. in 1861, first winery in the Napa by Prussian-born Charles Krug. Today the winery remains under the leadership of the Peter Mondavi Sr Family, who purchased the winery in 1943. Blend of 90% Cab Sauv, 9% Petit Verdot, 1% Merlot, dark red with ripe dark berry scents & sweet spice. Palate sweet blackberry & cherry flavors, leather, cacao & vanilla oak. Soft tannins, lingering, ending with sweet oak & fruit! Very nice!

3 people found it helpfulNov 4th, 2018Blueberry and chocolate notes. Good structure and could do for another 3-5 years in the bottle. A tad sweet on the tongue which overpowers any softness that could be there. Enjoyed it with my daughter and couldn’t help but wonder - Anthony Bourdain’s suicide - it just doesn’t make sense to me based on what news that I have read. Why? So awful and 😞.
