Decanted to separate the sediment. Haven’t given it much air time but it’s already showing very nicely. Nose has lots of rich, gravelly earthy scents, competing with dark berry and cassis fruit. Cedar and underbrush notes too. Still hasn’t totally relaxed on the palate. Probably needs a few more years ideally. There’s a certain tightness to it but it’s nevertheless showing well. Nice flavor concentration, with fruit initially but getting tight and savory as the lengthy finish progresses. Lots of fine-grained tannins, and nice acidity. This seems pretty old-school in feel, not jammy and huge. 9.2 for now but let’s see what happens over the next hour or two.
UPDATE (night 2): This has developed nicely since yesterday evening. A lot more very pure cassis fruit showing on the nose, and the texture seems softer. Upping score from 9.2 to 9.3.

Vintage 2017 | a very complete wine, with classic St Julien aroma’s like eucalyptus, cedar, cassis. Rich and vibrant taste. Very good effort. Beautiful balance.

On the palate flavors of blackberry, currents and cacao with notes of violets, oak and spice. Fine gritty tannins, long finish ending with fruit, floral and mineral spice. Tasting well!

The 2017 Langoa-Barton has a wonderful bouquet with blackberry, briary, potpourri and light violet scents that are extremely well integrated with the 60% new oak. Nothing pretentious, nothing extravagant. The palate is medium-bodied with very supple tannin, one of the most pliable Langoa’s that I can recall with plenty of black cherry and cassis fruit on the structured finish. This is a great Langoa-Barton that comes highly recommended. (Neal Martin, Vinous, February 2020)

Blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (54%), Merlot (38%) and Cabernet Franc (8%). Dark ruby color with purple highlights. Dark fruit aromas with hints of charcoal, bramble, mint and violets. Black cherry leads the palate along with notes of blueberry, plum, currants and dark chocolate. Hint of minerals and fresh herbs on the long finish. Juicy, fresh tasting and well structured.
