The 2012 Smith Haut Lafitte has an intense, well-defined and quite complex bouquet with blackberry, briary and cigar humidor scents. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, fine acidity, cohesive and poised with quite a firm grip towards the finish. This is another classy Pessac-Léognan and a wonderful example from Pessac-Léognan that might well be leading the pack at this stage. Bon vin. Tasted twice at Bordeaux Index's Ten Year-On tasting and blind at the Southwold Ten-Year On tasting. (Neal Martin, Vinous, September 2022)

Dates back to the Crusades & Scottish navigator, George Smith, owner in 18th century, followed by M. Duffour-Dubergier, Mayor of Bordeaux, then Louis Eschenauer, wine shipper. In 1990, Daniel & Florence Cathiard now own estate. A blend of 55% Cab Sauv, 40% Merlot, 4% Cab Franc, & 1% Petit Verdot. Dark red with dark berry fruit aromas, cedar and sweet spice. On the palate rich & complex ripe black fruit flavors, oak & cacao. Firm rich tannins, full, lingering, perfect balance. L-T aging.

It is Friday night and what better way to celebrate the start of the weekend then with a Bordeaux. I can't think of one. This 2012 Château Smith Haut Lafitte is a fine example of what I have come to love about Bordeaux. The blend is 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot.

The nose has that rich black fruit of black plum, black cherry, blueberry, black currant, a touch of strawberry, violet, black pepper, sweet tobacco leaf, graphite and some nice soil.

Upon entry onto the palate there is a smooth creamy sweetness, black cherry, blackberry, blueberry, black currant, tobacco, spice, graphite and a rich earthy soil.

The wine is full has a full body mouth feel, a medium + fresh acidity with medium + round mouth coating tannins that transitions right into a long lasting finish. My kind of Bordeaux setting up a start to an expected beautiful weekend. Please enjoy yourselves this weekend and be safe. Nostrovia! 🍷🍷🍷🍷

It was a French week in Bermuda! Another fantastic bottle: aromas of cherry and anise. Slight bricking of color. Blackberry, graphite and gravel. I say oui oui! At Port of Call, Bermuda
