Gavarini Chiniera Barolo Nebbiolo

Popped and poured; enjoyed over the course of a few hours. The 2011 “Gavarini Chiniera” pours a deep garnet color with a transparent core; medium+ viscosity with no staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is developing with notes of ripe red fruit: Morello cherry, roses, licorice, tar, cigar box, Alpine herbs, menthol, truffle, and dry gravelly earth. On the palate, the wine is bone dry with high tannin and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is long juicy and grippy. Certainly a wine in full stride right now. If you have some, open a bottle now and enjoy the benefits of this solar vintage. Enjoy the rest before 2041.

Decanted for three hours. In a good spot, but you should probably hold. With pizza and Caesar salad for the man's birthday.

Showing a lively and pretty bouquet of woodland pine and cedar with bright cherry, raspberry and licorice. On the palate, I found tart cherry and cranberry which darkened and sweetened as it traveled across the senses, adding balsamic tones and mint going into the finish. It's showing the 2011 exuberance, yet is still youthful with hints of fine tannin lingering on the palate.

Pop and pour(!). These 2011s are showing very well right now. On the nose: ripe wild strawberry, blood orange, violets...so bright and hi-toned with a touch of VA...lovely. On the palate: fantastic acidity, more blood orange, black cherry, soft tarry notes, good density, and then a bright, but still very tannic, finish. Could do with more time open, but will follow over several days.

Jonathon brought back from Italy. I thought would not be ready/too tannic but was proved wrong. After 30 min huge bouquet of cherry/red fruit. Beautifully integrated tannins with cherry and other red guitar with mild oak tinge . Delicious want more. Will be good next 2 decades but why wait. A beauty.

Beautiful color red with a touch of brown. Perhaps due to the age. Definitely an old world nose but no Brett that I can smell. A bit acidic on the finish. Fairly heavy in tannin as there was a lot of chalkiness on the finish as well. Going to give it some time to open up.

A luscious, broad-shouldered magnum paired with mutton and prime rib at Keens. Lovely! Thanks to Amos Lee for the bottle

I'm crazy about this! Absolutely what Barolo should be in my view. Luscious Rasberry, kirsch, lengthy smooth mineral finish. Drinking fantastic now with a short decant. Would have rated even higher if I thought it was a year that would age much longer. This is really in the sweet spot now!
