Montes
Folly La Finca de Apalta Syrah
With the release of the first Montes Alpha wine back in 1988, Montes became one of the first premium wineries of Chile. 100% Syrah, aged for 18 months in oak, rich Ruby with aromas of ripe black fruits, sweet spice and complex spice. On the palate juicy blackberry flavors with notes of cacao and toasty spices. Well balanced with acidity, full ripe rustic tannins, lingering ending with smoky spice. A big Syrah! Very nice!

Jan 3rd, 2018Mushrooms, green herbs, plenty of juicy dark fruit and a surprising sprinkling of diesel fuel. Tastes great, nose is very rich early on but fades a little. Well balanced and thoroughly enjoyable.

Nov 26th, 2016O Tannin Bomb!
I was a big fan of the Montes Alpha so when this came up, I figured I would give it a try.
In the glass, it was impenetrably dark red. Verging on black. The nose had some vegetal notes, including tomato and green pepper. There was also dark cherry, old leather, and wet granite.
As soon as the first sip hit my mouth, the tannins struck me. It was fairly remarkable. Wine Folly says I should use the terms muscular and rigid. To my palate, they were aggressive enough to drown out the fruit. Naturally, went much better with food. But for the price, it shouldn't need food.
I think this wine needs to rest for a while. Disappointing #QPR hence the score.
