My last bottle of this superb Syrah. Winner of the Trevor Mast Trophy for best Shiraz in the 2015 Royal Melbourne Wine Show. Very Northern Rhone like. Rich and savoury, spicy, slightly meaty. Full bodied. Dark Chocolate with hints of bacon fat. At its peak at 11 years old. I see Antonio Galloni gave it 93 points with a drinking window through to 2027. What can’t the Yarra Valley do? Known for its excellent Pinot Noir and Chardonnay but also its fabulous Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz. Go elsewhere for Riesling. — a year ago

The 2018 Barolo Prapò is a dark, dense wine. Red cherry, plum, tobacco, cedar, spice, smoke, cured meats and menthol add do an impression of brooding intensity. The Prapò has more body and overall depth than the Serralunga Barolo, but also quite a bit more tannin. I have a slight preference for the Serralunga bottling in this vintage. The 2020 Ilatraia is a potent red that is going to need at least a few years in bottle to soften. Swaths of tannin wrap around a core of black fruit, chocolate, new leather, licorice, incense and lavender. A wine of substance and power, Ilatraia is not as forthcoming as most wines from the Tuscan coast. I suspect the high percentage of Petit Verdot in the blend has a lot to do with that. This is a superb showing, especially for a vintage that yielded generally lighter wines on the coast. (Antonio Galloni, Vinous, August 2023)

The Cognac Composition is a very pretty, easygoing introduction to the range of Tesseron Cognacs. Floral and relatively light in body, the Composition offers up hints of charred lemon, sage, chamomile, dried flowers and subtle toast accents. It will do nicely when something simple and light is called for. This is the only Cognac in the Tesseron range that is not X.O. (Antonio Galloni, Vinous, December 2022)

This is a Super Tuscan, Bordeaux varietal blend from Roberto Cavalli's family. Despite its 8-year age, it shows younger. The color is still solidly a deep purple-red. Blackberry and cherry on the nose, follows as sour cherry and cola on the palate. Medium body, medium plus acidity, somewhat bitter tannins and medium finish. I do not get any tertiary notes, and the experience is not well integrated or round. Not sure what I'm missing. This is one of the only times I've disagreed with @Antonio Galloni. So don't take my word for it. Still good, not very good.

This wine is tinted a fairly dark purple in the glass. The nose has aromas of red fruit, like plums, currant, and cherries. There is a hint of anise in the sniff, too. The palate is intriguing. There are flavors of black cherry, licorice, and cassis, but with a bit of a rustic edge. I don’t know what tree bark tastes like, but something here makes me think of it. And, there is a faint reminder from my childhood: cough syrup. If I make the wine sound bad, I’m sorry. I intend only to accent its unique and fascinating qualities. — 9 months ago
