Descendientes de José Palacios

Pétalos Bierzo Mencía 2020

Popped and poured; enjoyed over the course of a couple of hours. The 2020 “Pétalos” pours a deep purple color with a magenta rim and an opaque core; medium+ viscosity with moderate staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is developing with ripe and tart black fruits: blackberries, black cherry, salmiakki, horse blanket, and mixed earth. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ tannin and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is medium. A crazy, ambitious wine that’s the result of assembling over 300 plots. Between Raúl Perez and Palacios, Mencia doesn’t get much better. Drink now through 2030. — a year ago

Bodegas y Viñedos Castro Ventosa

Valtuille Villegas 2018

Raúl Perez is just a beast, this is again one of his family vineyard wines, it is a very elegant, burgundy sort of wine with a great fruity nose of cherries and raspberries with a nice wet stone undertone, taste very elegant and smooth with a great saltiness and a still strong acidity, little young and needs some air as well, beautiful wine if you like this elegant type of wines — 4 years ago

Los Arrotos del Pendón Prieto Picudo Rosado 2022

Popped and poured; enjoyed over the course of 90 minutes. The 2022 pours, a bright magenta color with a transparent core; medium viscosity with no staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is developing with notes of fresh strawberry, watermelon, kiwi, gravelly earth. On the palate, the wine is dry with low tannins and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is medium. This is a deliciously quaffable Rosado and yet has enough complexity and “je ne sais quoi” to grab one’s attention. Drink now and over the next handful of years. Uncle Raúl is a master. — 2 years ago

Atalier a Cruz das Animas Rias Baixas Albariño 2021

2021. We really enjoyed one of his Godellos with oysters before, so when we got a delivery from Massachusetts today, it was an easy choice. This wine is rich with salty green apple flavors, and nice acidity. We all loved the pairing. — 3 years ago

Cantariña

5 Valdeobispo Mencía

A very serious 100% Mencía, Valdeobispo is sourced from a 1.6 hectare plot planted in 1910 in the eponymous lieu-dit in Villafranca del Bierzo. This was the first vintage of this single-vineyard bottled under Cantariña’s label. Prior to this, grapes were sold to their neighbor Raúl Pérez, who actually advised them to vinify this plot on its own. Fermented in oak foudre and aged in used barriques for 12 months. Unusually dark ruby color, quite concentrated, slightly rustic. Aromas of red fruit, hibiscus, floral and earthy notes. Round and powerful, smooth tannins — 5 years ago

Ultreia Saint Jacques Mencía 2017

Somehow rustic but in a good sense, an intriguing wine that challenges you to keep discovering more and more its nuances. Full of personality and excellent value for money. Ideal entrance to Raúl Pérez universe. — 6 years ago

Forja del Salnes

Leirana Ma Luisa Lazaro Albarino 2019

Popped and poured; enjoyed over the course of an hour. The 2019 Mª Luisa Lázaro pours a striking, almost radioactive yellow with medium viscosity. On the nose, the wine is developing with notes of Meyer lemon, lime, starfruit, Granny Smith apple, sea spray, and rocky minerals. On the palate, the wine is dry with high acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is long, creamy and incredibly saline…like…how did they do that?! Spellbinding stuff. Further proof (as if any more was necessary) that Raúl Pérez is a freaking magician. Until now, this wine has only been released three times: 2005, 2013 and 2019. Only 2500 bottles of this ambrosia were made. Drink now through 2039. — a year ago

Ultreia Bierzo Godello

Dry, elegant Godello from three sites around Valtuille de Abajo in Bierzo, Raúl Pérez’ hometown. Fermented in used barrels. Austere nose with notes of grapefruit and lime. Mineral, lightly saline, reminiscent of classic Chablis. Nice, slightly bitter finish. — 6 years ago

Encinas Bierzo Mencia 2017

Paella night! I know we’re supposed to do Rioja, but Bierzo is on the table tonight. Cracked pepper & blackberry nose. Full bodied, more dark berries and smoky notes cross the mid palate. Structured, but very approachable and enjoyable right now. — 6 years ago
