The 2001 Le Clos du Caillou Reserve is probably the most thrilling effort made by the late Jean-Denis Vacheron. Deep garnet in color, the wine displays intense aromas of dried provence herbs, iodine, dried strawberries, red cherries and plums, blackberry liquor, leather, forrest floor and a dash of white pepper. Full-bodied, the palate is almost overwhelmed by insane levels of fruit concentration and elevated alcohol, but there is just enough acidity to keep everything in balance. Vintage 1999 | deep colour 3/4 transparant with brown rim, earthy smell with dried forrest leaves, red cherries and a light truffle expression. Initially thought this might be corked, took 30min for the funkiness to blow off. Nose was neutral after half hr and exploded with black fruit and forrest floor after an hr. Needed 2+ hr decant and didn’t disappoint. Rich with subtle power. Peaking now-to next few yrs. — 2 years ago
Vintage 2004 | Fits well in winter, says my wife. I gave her this Madiran without telling its origin and asked to describe it. Amazing how good partners of winelovers often taste. Rich smell, cedar.
