2012. Excellent Cabernet-based Super Tuscan, drinking perfectly now (in store bin for 3-4 years!). Starts out with reticent black and blue fruits (and pomegranate?) with a strong undercurrent of iron/minerals. After three hours the tannins smooth out to reveal just the right balance of fruit, leather, tar and earth. Rich and complex, tastes like a high-quality Bordeaux by later evening. One of the best wines I’ve had all year and a steal at $45 at JW. — 3 years ago
2004 Le Macchiole Messorio Merlot. Lunch at Gucci w JW & AC. Decanted and served immediately. Should have decanted sooner. Took a while to open up. It was alright, but not as good as the bottled we’d had last week (‘90s vintage?) — 4 years ago

A generous gift from JW to commemorate the birth of my first daughter.
Blackberry, pencil lead, cassis on the nose. Some petrol notes are present but mostly blow off after an hour. Flavors of blackberry, raspberry, and blackberry liquer with a long finish. It's a bit hot, but a strong showing for the vintage.
Drink now or enjoy over the next 10 years.

In the JW lineup, this is now my entry point. I've always found the Red a little harsh (I enjoy everything neat), and maybe it's my advancing age, while I used to really like Black but now think it's too smokey. Palate evolution I guess...
