La Stoppa

Camporomano Barbera 2012

A very brave new offering at Il Barreto, Paddington for $175. Initial barnyard bouquet (mostly) blows off. A superb vintage wine at it’s peak. It is proving very hard to find at retail in this country.

Vino Tinto Chileno 2016

Been looking forward to trying this Chilean project from the people at La Stoppa for some time; happy to report that despite being a bit brusk, this vino tinto delivers on the combination of high toned density of La Stoppa rossos and smokiness of old vine pais. — 5 years ago

Viña El Pison La Rioja Alavesa Tempranillo 2015

— 5 years ago

Macchiona Rosso di Rivergaro Emilia Barbera Bonarda Blend 2011

Great wine - remind me of Austrian reds from blaufrankish by gut oggau - same tension and density. — 5 years ago

Triple A Trebbiolo Vino Rosso 2021

Had La Macchiona as part of a wine pairing at Septime, so I had to grab a bottle from this producer when I saw it. Not sure what I expected but it was much richer, fuller, and sweeter than I thought. The sweetness slowly wore off giving way to ripe cherries and rhubarb as it opened. Stood up well to the Mediterranean food of all things we had with it and actually quite a nice compliment to it in many ways. Lacked some depth but primary characteristics were strong and carried this wine beyond my expectations. — 5 months ago

Podere Pradarolo

Vej Bianco Antico Malvasia di Candia 2018

Vej is not subtle about its affiliation with Orange. This sees a full 90 days of skin contact and reminds me of an equally polarizing wine - Ageno from La Stoppa. I believe they are both made from the same unique grape (unique from Malvasia at that).

If you like orange, if you like juicy hazy IPAs, if you like huge tannin, you’ll love Vej. Beautiful copper gold. Aromas of yeasty peach skin and spiced apricot. Bitter grapefruit and biscuit.
