Sorì Paitin Barbaresco Nebbiolo 2004

A reopening wine. Brilliant fruit, firmly structured, with slightly tart tones leading to a medium long finish. Happily paired with flatiron steak fresh from a kitchen other than mine. My first Paitin in fact. — 6 years ago

Produttori del Barbaresco

Riserva Montestefano Barbaresco Nebbiolo 2009

Originally, I only planned to pour the De Forville, the Roccalini and the Paitin but it just didn't seem right to host a Barbaresco class and not have a Produttori in the mix. So, I pulled this from the cellar as a bonus. Boy, am I glad I did. On the pop and pour, this had a striking burnt rubber smell; like from a pencil eraser. This blew off after a few minutes however and became sensational with the most perfect expression of Montmorency cherries, tar, and crushed rock. The 2009 Produttori "Montestefano" is so balanced and yet incredibly powerful. It also remains powerfully tannic. The finish is remarkably long; lasting well over two minutes. This is still very primary and would benefit for continued cellar time. Wow...I love this wine. This will drink well for decades to come. Bottle No. 12202. Bravo! — 7 years ago

Cascina Roccalini

Roccalini Barbaresco Nebbiolo 2014

My first experience with Cascina Roccalini was last year with the 2013 vintage and I was hugely impressed so I was very excited to try the 2014 version. Popped and poured; initially bright ruby in the glass but became noticeably darker, turning to garnet after about fifteen minutes. The nose on the 2014 Roccalini was opulent; far and away the freshest and most interesting of the group in the first couple of hours with beautiful, ripe cherries, bruised red delicious apples, tar, baking spices and roses. So much pleasure! After about hour three, the roses gave way for Easter Lilies...which I can't ever recall in a red wine before. However, around hour five, the Roccalini started to fall apart and the finish became watery and thin which is exactly what happened to the 2014 "Sori Paitin"; further reinforcing my feeling that the 2014's will be a vintage to enjoy while they are younger and preferably within the first couple hours of being open. Drink now or before 2022. — 7 years ago

Ca Veja Nebbiolo d'Alba 2017

Committed to trying more old world wines this year and this is a tasty number to kick that off! Easy drinker, very subtle cherry, not fruity. Definite acid and citrus, light tannins, would go great with red sauce as well as heartier fish. Appealing ruby color. Opened up with some air-time/decanting for sure and would likewise benefit from some cellar time. But a very good vibe even at this young age. — 7 years ago
