South Burnett, Queensland

Frederick Stevenson

Pinata Red Blend 2023

It falls in the chilled red category
I am starting to appreciate why here in Queensland this typology is so popular.
Cinsault, grenache, shiraz and mataro
Very easy and pleasnt
No edges.
Quite long too

Norfolk Rise

Mount Benson Shiraz 2015

Aromatic notes of black cherry with some spice and pepper. On the palate plump black cherries and spice with medium intensity and palate weight. Could be the QPR of the year at $9.90 and a Trophy Winner from Royal Queensland Wine Show to boot. — 5 years ago

Clovely Estate

Left Field Sémillon 2013

Pale to mid Gold in colour. Aromas of wet hay and lemon with some nutty notes developing. On the palate early stages of honeyed characters developing amongst the grapefruit and brisk acidity. An excellent Semillon from the relatively new viticultural area of the South Burnett, 3 hours drive northwest of Brisbane which you would think would be too hot and humid for quality viticulture but Semillon does well in humid warmer climes like the Hunter Valley for example. At the 2016 Queensland Wine Show this wine won 2 Trophies. Could be cellared for many years. — 5 years ago

South Burnett Table Sémillon Chardonnay 2014

Semillon Chardonnay - this has to be the most Aussie wine ever. Luscious semillion with tropical fruits at fantastic price — 7 years ago

Pepperjack

Barossa Shiraz 2021

Good Shiraz. Little spice and pepper and then very smooth mid palate. Long finish. Good value, too. If I wasn’t on a fantastic beach in Northern Queensland, my rating might be a little lower. 😎🇦🇺 — a year ago

Just Red Wines

Granite Belt Tannat 2015

Another obscure red variety from the south of France like the Durif from a few days ago this isTannat although some researchers say it may have originated in the Basque Country of northern Spain which could be correct as it was taken to Uruguay where it has enjoyed the warmer climate there, similar to Malbec flourishing in Argentina. I first tried this wine in 2016 at the Toowoomba Wine Show where I found it extremely tannic. 4 years of cellaring since then has served this wine from the Granite Belt well. It is another dense black winter wine showing Blackberry and tarry notes with Raspberry and Vanilla. Rich and full bodied with stern tannins but not as tannic as 4 years ago. Barb who doesn’t normally like big reds very much liked this. This wine has now won 3 Trophies in its Show career winning the Champion Alternative Variety Red Wine at the 2016 Queensland Wine Awards. — 4 years ago

If you want to experience tannat look for Chateau Montus and wait 30 years otherwise you will need a new set of teeth 😀

Leconfield

Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon 2010

Luminosa Margaret River Chardonnay 2022

“Funky Road Medina”! Struck Match, smoky, nutty, leesy - somewhat worked. Too Lean on the palate to be a Trophy Winner for my taste. Light to medium weight palate - citrus and pink grapefruit with Medium acid. This wine was awarded the Trophy for Best Chardonnay at the Royal Queensland Wine Show about a month ago. From Margaret River but leaner than the other famous Chardonnays there like Leeuwin Estate, Heytesbury, Pierro etc. Not cheap at $100 per bottle. Will improve with bottle age. — a year ago

Meant to say Funky Cold Medina………

S.C. Pannell

Langhorne Creek Montepulciano 2016

Plum, Dust and a little toffee. Fairly closed nose but with time in decanter notes of ginger and marjoram. Wine is a little shy on nose and palate. Tannins are supple and pliant. The following night a bit too cold from the fridge. Comes about because of this brute of a summer we are experiencing in Australia and particularly Queensland. Drought Wind Dust with high temperatures over 40 degrees C and Bushfires for weeks! — 5 years ago

Canberra District Shiraz 2013

Aromas of white pepper and spice leap out of the glass. Also transferred on to the medium weight palate. Soft mild tannins- not for cellaring but very good now. This wine has an amazing Show Record at the Royal Queensland Wine Show in 2014 winning the Stodart Trophy for Best One Year old Red; the Trophy for Best Shiraz and then the big one the Best Wine of Show! Made all the more amazing with a price of only $27.95! From a small maker so unlikely to find outside of Australia. — 6 years ago

@David L Yes David - many Canberra District winemakers now trying to emulate the success of the flagship for the region which is Clonakilla Shiraz Viognier. Could be available in the US - sells here for around $100 AUD and is very Northern Rhone in style.
