Fraga do Corvo Monterrei Mencía 2017

ESF
9.2

Wowza, this really over-delivered for $20: inky no sign of age on rim, effusive dark fruit, brooding ripe black & blue berried mingled with spices, cocoa, dried herbs, minerals, hoisin - blind I would have guessed Mourvèdre from Southern France. Great extract & density of flavors on nose & mid palate, cut a broad swath, smooth rich, finely grained tannins balanced seamlessly. Bit less acidity than Mencia from Bierzo, but enough for the smoked ribs devoured alongside this gem. — 2 months ago

Monterrei Godello Treixadura 2022

So good at Paprica we bought a bottle for €23 from the restaurant. I’m amazed how cheap bottles and BTG are in Italy & Spain. — a year ago

Bodega Couto Mixto

Monterrei Red Blend 2018

Blend of Mencia, caiño and bastardo (aka merenzao or trousseau) from biodynamically farmed vineyards in Mandin (Monterrei, Galicia’s smallest and least known appellation). Whole-cluster fermentation with indigenous yeasts. Dark ruby color. Quite pleasant, slightly rustic nose with aromas of dark fruit, some herbal (eucalyptus?) and earthy notes. Fresh, quite dry on the palate, some cherry flavors, high acidity — 4 years ago
