Vinhas Altas

Antonio Madeira

Vinhas Velhas Dão Red Blend 2020

Pretty deep ruby with medium wide pink rim . Quite closed and mineral focused nose , with grafite , wet stone , dark cherry , blackberry and touch of toast . On the palate quite elegant dark fruits , with dark cherry , blackberry , grafite and cacao . Medium bodied with very fresh quite intense acidity and gritty , quite dry tannins . Medium length crushed rock and grafite tinged finish. This needs more time , better in 3-4 years and will last well a further 5-8 — 8 months ago

'Matas Altas' Jumilla Monastrell Blend 2020

ESF
9.2

One of the absolute best Monastrell I’ve had from Spain. I specifically told the wine store guy I didn’t line most of these from Spain because they are too fruit driven & flabby. He said this was old school and very reminiscent of southern France. He was spot on: this had that feral quality, meaty, iron, black olives, smoky, just transported me back to the affordable days of Minervois & Bandol. Balanced beautiful generous - kept opening more & more over a couple of hours. A real treat! — a year ago

Primeiras Vinhas Alvarinho 2022

Solid Alvarinho with a clean flavor. Good minerality. But not an extraordinary Alvarinho. — 6 months ago

Quinta de Foz de Arouce

Vinhas Velhas de Santa Maria Vinho Regional Beiras Baga Red Blend 2005

80% Baga with 20% Touriga National blended in. Only made in select vintages. Dark ruby color throughout. Bright and concentrated red fruit notes on both the nose and palate. Hints of red flowers, baking spices, minerals, garrigue and tobacco. Extremely long finish. Beautiful balance even at 18 years of age. Acidity and tannins have harmonized beautifully. Fresh tasting and still quite powerful. I do not understand why the Baga grape has such a poor reputation. Every Quinta de Foz de Arouce wine made from this grape that I have had the pleasure of tasting has been exceptional. — 2 years ago
