Bodega El Esteco

Don David Reserve Malbec 2018

I don’t drink many purple wines these days in fact if any, but this was a gift from a colleague & supervisee so I felt a certain obligation. Not a bad one: new oak obvious, still has some lift and floral notes through that blueberry/ blueberry pie palate. You could do a lot worse, and Frederick Wildman thought enough of it to import. Still, caveat is that not my taste but some may be wild over it ( a 92 from J Suckling?! My lord, he does score high). — 4 years ago

I do appreciate his enthusiasm but his scores are predictably 2-3 above others. There does seem to be a strategy (colluding/identifying with wine makers?) but not sure what it is.....@Severn Goodwin

Nino Negri

Quadrio Valtellina Superiore Nebbiolo 2016

Im biased towards Italian mountain reds, so not surprised that I have a crush on this qpr from Lombardy. For about 16$ you get a lithe, medium bodied 90% Chiavennasca (local version of Nebbiolo), 10% merlot with an ease on the palate- ‘suppose that’s the influence of the Merlot. Builds in power & depth with air. Sweet rose hips, wild berries, underbrush. Nice back end length though the sweetness not my thing. For Nebbiolo fiends, a real find. Only about 1800 bottles imported, according to its importer, Wildman. — 3 years ago

Moulin-à-Vent Vieilles Vignes Gamay 2013

A plumb-y, stolid little moulin a vent. The age rounds & deepens black cherry notes. Should have served it cooler. Wildman Importer — 5 years ago

Domaine Armand Rousseau

Les Cazetiers Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Pinot Noir 2009

Only 10 cases of Cazetiers imported into US according to Frederic Wildman. Exhilarating concentration and purity. Rich and impeccably structured, speaking to the vintage. Initial reduction dissipates to reveal ripe dark fruits, fallen leaves and exotic spices, all supported by a mineral backbone. Finishes with outstanding length, lift, power and intensity. A real treat. — 4 years ago

El Coto de Rioja

Reserva Coto de Imaz Rioja Tempranillo Blend 2014

Monday night out w the boys, Harpers Dobbs Ferry & a very competent Rioja. The sulfur burns off quickly leaving a buoyant, fresh Rioja, but solidly medium body. Wildman importer . — 5 years ago
