Winter Brook

True Winter

Winter Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2010

It is time for my #FridayCabernetfix.

Inky in color with a short reddish rim. Not showing much age.

Full-bodied and elegant with medium acidity and long legs.

Dry and very fruity on the palate with blackberries, black currants, plums, cooked cherries, dried figs, raisins, cedar, licorice, vanilla, tobacco, herbs, spices, cola, light eucalyptus and black pepper

Long finish with fine grained tannins and cherries.

This is a gorgeous Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa Valley. Rich, extracted and fruit forward. Soft and elegant, yet in your face kind of wine. Tangy and interesting.

Good right out of the bottle and a great pop and pour wine, with a great nose, right out of the bottle.

This 14 year old Napa Cabernet is drinking beautifully now. Big and juicy. Tannins are nicely integrated by now, and so is the alcohol.

Peaking now and will continue to drink nicely in the next 5 to 7 years.

Nicely balanced at this point, and showing a smooth mouthfeel. Complex and interesting by itself as a sipping wine, to share with good friends. It's a shame that this rare wine is no longer being produced.

A great sipping wine that will pair nicely with a big piece of steak.

15.4% alcohol by volume.

94 points.

$100 (at release).

It was either water or Rose’ for the week, I’ve had this in the fridge for a couple years now. Time to move it out of the way for winter covid storage.

Calvados 1958

As close to perfection as can be..,, smooth, silken, 2-minute finish. Nose of ripe, preserved, wrinkled apples…complete, complex, hints of baking spices, lighter than anticipated, but packing that 80 proof wallop. I anticipate most of bottle will grace a cool winter evening in front of the fire for 2 couples! — a year ago

Pipers Brook Vineyard

Pinot Noir 2019

Pale to mid Ruby in colour with great clarity. Aromatic red and black Cherry notes with rose petals. A stalky whole bunch note with a little spice. Those fresh cherry notes of medium weight but medium plus intensity transfer through to the palate. Very fresh, young with great potential for future complexity. I can see why it won the Trophy for Best Pinot Noir at both Royal Adelaide and Royal Hobart - both shows with extensive and high quality Pinot entries. Too young but I had to try the first of 6. Next in a year plus. Technical background: (whole berry ferments with 20% whole bunches. Aged in 25% new puncheons and Barriques). Ended up having the 2nd bottle 195 weeks later on 25th October 2024. Just a stunning Pinot Noir and even improving on that 2 Trophies standard. — 4 years ago

@Greg Gosselin Yes Greg. They have been high quality producers in the Tamar River for a while now. Also make a good sparkling.

He was certainly a giant of Tasmanian viticulture. Matthew Jukes (UK) once said that a wine he made was”the greatest sparkling wine made outside of Champagne “.
