Music and Wine: May 2019

Welcome to Delectable's column, Music and Wine! If you’re on the lookout for newly released music, grab your headphones. If you’re searching for a fresh bottle, grab your glass. And if you’re looking for the perfect wine to pair with that pop song you can't stop playing on repeat, then sit back, relax, and enjoy these Delectable tunes. Each month, we will gather a playlist of newly released songs and pair them with wines that hit all the right notes. Listen on Spotify Now 1. Old Town Road Remix – Lil Nas X featuring Billy Ray Cyrus Were we expecting this collaboration? No, but we are enjoying it. There are three versions of this song that you could pair with different beverages: Lil Nas X, Lil Nas X featuring Billy Ray Cyrus, and even a Diplo remix. Nothing seems more fitting for this Lil Nas X and Billy Ray remix than a Texas Rye . Grab your glass, bottle, horses and turn up the volume. 2. When Am I Gonna Lose You – Local Natives Off their latest album, Violet Street, this song from the Local Natives gives us all the spring and summer dance around your apartment with the windows open vibes. Whether you find yourself dancing around solo or enjoying time with friends, you should listen to this song with a glass of Rosé Champagne in your hand. 3. Hello Sunshine - Bruce Springsteen Bruce Springsteen’s newest album will be released June 14. This song makes us feel like we should be listening to Springsteen’s familiar voice while sitting on a porch and drinking a glass of aged white wine. We’re saying hello to this new single and hello to sunshine by drinking a glass of Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc . 4. Jenny of Oldstones – Florence + the Machine Florence + the Machine AND Game of Thrones? Count us in. This haunting song that is sung in preparation for battle gives us chills. Even if this song was not created with Game of Thrones in mind, it would still give off the Old World vibe, which makes an Old World wine the perfect match. Fill your goblet with a Plavac Mali from Croatia. 5. Fire – Sara Bareilles In this song off her newest album, Sara Bareilles reflects on a relationship that was never supposed to develop into a burning love story. For this idea of struggling and coming out victorious after learning and accepting reality, we recommend a 2015 Argentine Malbec . Vinous critic, Stephen Tanzer comments on Argentinean wine saying, “Several producers on my April tour mentioned that they made better wines in ’15 after having gained useful experience in ’14, and a few said the same thing about ’16 following ’15. ” – Argentina’s Wines Enter the World Stage , July 2018. Come out of that battle and grab yourself a glass! 6. Bad Things – Mini Mansions Bad Things is a song off of the upcoming album, Guy Walks Into A Bar. This song makes us want to ignore all responsibilities and hit the town. We also feel like we've been placed in a movie montage. We suggest a Douro red with some residual sugar to reflect the lyric, “I taste the bitters and I wanna have some sugar to taste” all while feeling the fire of a full-body red. 7. Cellophane – FKA twigs FKA twigs is back with a single that stays true to her unique and intriguing style. While different instruments and sounds come in at various points that can be shocking to the ear, the piano notes in the background keep the song grounded and remind us of a balanced Grenache that builds over time just has her voice does throughout the song. Viña Cobos

Felino Mendoza Malbec 2017

What is going on here? Paul Hobbs making top notch, inexpensive Malbec in Mendoza?!? Dark fruit with great acidic balance and very approachable tannin. Not my typical preference, but this is very well made for under $20. Recommend some air time. — 6 years ago

Sine Qua Non

Atlantis Fe2O3-2c Grenache 2005

2005 Sine Qua Non "Atlantis Fe203-2a" California Grenache
15.3% alcohol. 93% Grenache and 7% Syrah. So I return yet again to sing the praises of one Manfred Krankl, the Man, the Myth, the Legend. I originally pulled this bottle for an El Ideas dinner I was unfortunately unable to attend. The bad news is that I missed the artistry of @phillipfoss. The good news is that it’s here tonight. This is a wine that demands your complete and undivided attention which it never would have received in a restaurant setting with other wines. It needs to be doted on like the pretty girl at the dance. It needs to be the absolute center of attention. One of the highlights (and there are legion) of any SQN for me is the aromatic extravaganza I’ve come to expect, and this wine’s initial profile when the cork is pulled is akin to walking into a florist. That perfumed fragrance just floods the room. More swirling reveals sandalwood, anise, dark berries with some orange peel and just a touch of mint. It’s intense. It’s like when the server removes the cloche on an @grantachatz Alinea dish, and that scent wafts up and just engulfs you. You become immersed in that sensory overload. The show continues with an initial palate of succulent red fruits and kirsch, with notes of dark chocolate, espresso and that mint I mentioned on the nose. Subsequent returns to the glass reveal hints of grilled meats, sage and forest floor. Tannins and texture are pure silk. Persistent, fresh and slightly spicy finish of great length. The wine is beautifully integrated. Complex. Elegant. Wonderfully pure. Perfection? Let’s just say that if this wine isn’t first in its class, it doesn’t take long to call the roll.
