Honey In the Summer – PUBLIC Summer is around the corner, and it’s time to start curating that perfect summer playlist filled to the brim with lighthearted, danceable tunes that bring a smile to your face. PUBLIC, a Cincinnati pop trio, is providing us with the windows down, music blasting, driving fast down the highway vibes that exude summer fun. The song covers the topic of seeing couples all over social media but actually finding yourself single. Instead of this being a negative narrative, PUBLIC hypes us singles up and creates a song centered around grabbing your keys and favorite CD and making the most of your own company. Chill a bottle of honey filled Alsace Riesling to sip on once you return home. 2. Like You’ll Never See Me Again – Jacob Banks Jacob Banks’ latest release, a cover of an Alicia Keys original, will all at once have you open mouthed at the sound of his seemingly effortless powerful voice, swaying your head to the lovely piano notes, and your chest will tighten a bit with the relevance of the subject matter. While the lyrics have always been emotionally charged with a hint of sadness hanging off every word, they are taken to a new level with Banks’ slowed pacing and stripped back sounds compared to Keys’ original. Additionally, releasing this cover during a time where social distancing defines the new normal and people are separated from loved ones, the messaging becomes that much more powerful. Turn up the volume, grab a glass of smooth Sonoma Zinfandel , and remember to call your loved ones. 3. What Kinda Music – Tom Misch & Yussef Dayes Drums, add some more drums, and then add, that’s right, more drums. “What Kinda Music” finds itself as the title track of the latest collaboration between guitarist and singer Tom Misch and drummer Yussef Dayes. Both artists hold jazz backgrounds that come in to play throughout their record; however, you don’t know what exactly you’re going to hear until you’ve listened to the entire album. If you think the track is leading towards one sound or genre, don’t be shocked if it ends up changing direction and going the complete opposite way. You enter this particular track on what seems to be random notes and drum beats, and then you’ll jump onto a beat drop with vocals thrown into the mix. The song ends with eerie strings appearing out of nowhere. Overall, this collaboration between Misch and Dayes offers organic sound that will definitely take you on a journey. Where will you end up? That’s up to you, but make sure you take a bottle of Mendoza Malbec along for the ride. 4. L.O.V.(e). – Ella Eyre Five years since her debut EP was released, UK pop star, Ella Eyre is reemerging with new singles and giving us a peek behind the curtain at her upcoming sophomore album. Contrasting the largely popular, slow jam “We Don’t Have To Take Our Clothes Off” that focuses on Eyre’s vocals, “L.O.V.(e)” will have you dancing around your living room on a Wednesday acting like you’re out on the town on a Saturday night. You'll be snapping to the beat and singing all about how you’re ready to get back out there and find love again. Sip on a glass of Sparkling Gamay and dance till the sun comes up. 5. Almost Maybes – Jordan Davis Another summer bop coming your way! Nashville country singer, Jordan Davis will release his self-titled EP on May 22. As a teaser, Davis gave fans a taste with the first track off the album, “Almost Maybes”. This song raises a glass to those relationships that ended after a few dates, never got off the ground, and those you just never heard from again. Davis sings, “Here's to the almost, so close / It's over out of the blues / Here's to the hey I think we need to talk / And the it ain't me it's you.” This easygoing country song personifies a simple shrug of the shoulders. Instead of looking back at failed relationships with bitterness or resentment, this song glances back with an “eh, oh well” attitude. Davis acknowledges that everything happens for a reason, and he wouldn’t be sitting next to the one who did work out if he hadn’t experienced all those “almost maybes”. Embrace this positive attitude and pop a bottle of Paso Robles Rosé 6. Man – JoJo Leave and get out if you think JoJo peaked when she released her hit songs at 13 years old. Don’t get us wrong, “Leave (Get Out)” will forever be included on the throwback playlists; however, now 29 year old JoJo recently released an album that showcases her growth with the same powerhouse vocals she showed the world at such a young age. “Man” offers a simple and smooth groove with lyrics centered on growing into who you are and looking for a partner that will love you like you can love yourself. From telling a boy to leave cause it’s the end of the relationship to singing about how she won’t settle for anything less than a man, JoJo continues to give us self-empowerment jams.
