Wine Situation Final Five (Now With Drunk Dialing!)

The Wine Situation hosts everyone from winemakers to writers to find out what a person’s situation is…with wine. It’s the solo season with host Ellen Clifford, but listen in with a glass, and nobody is drinking alone! In lieu of guests, at the end of every action-packed episode Ellen is phoning a friend with her Final Five questions. This week Ellen talks to Meaghan Odum, aka @trillwinewife, a wine professional and influencer. Check out the full episode here QUESTION ONE Ellen: What have you been drinking lately? Meaghan: Because we’re still in that summer lazy transition to fall, I focus on Sparkling Rosés , and of course Champagne . And then, I’m a big fan of Viognier and Chenin Blanc . So many people sleep on it. And of course, a good Albariño or Vinho Verde . Portuguese wine is calling my name. QUESTION TWO Ellen: Do you have a favorite pairing? Meaghan: I like to pair wine with life because wine is life. A lot of times we drink certain things because of what’s going on in our life. Sometimes we’re celebrating, sometimes we just need to calm down, sometimes we need a social drink, sometimes our kids are getting on our nerves. So, I always say pair it with life. QUESTION THREE Ellen: What kind of beverages, alcoholic or not, do you consume when it’s not wine? Meaghan: So of course, I start with either a coffee or a loaded tea; I love those. It’s a big Southern thing. You have protein in there. You have collagen and then you have caffeine. And it comes in different flavors—you can have watermelon, cherry, berry blast, blue raspberry, red raspberry…they give you the best energy. And then water. And then alcohol. I’m an equal opportunity alcohol promoter. QUESTION FOUR Ellen: Question number four, were you to make wine, what would you make and what would you call it? Meaghan: I would want Champagne. There are not many women in Champagne. And there’s a good chance that s*#t would sell. And for a name, anything under the Trill umbrella, like Trill Champagne. QUESTION FIVE Ellen: The last question is just what is bringing you joy these days? Meaghan: Getting little messages on my social media of people saying, “we’re so proud of you, look at you go, look at you doing things…like you came from nothing and now you’re flourishing and teaching others.” So that brings me the greatest joy, to know that I’m helping people and I’m doing a lot to spread the word about wine and bring empowerment to women. *** You can find the Meaghan on Instagram and Pinterest as @trillwinewife and Tik-Tok as @winemommeg Check out the previous Wine Situation podcast with Christopher Ruhland here .

Grande Escolha Vinho Verde Avesso Blend 2020

Very aromatic nose with yellow fruits (pineapple, peach) along with some white flower notes and citrusy zest (orange peel, tangerine...). This is quite impressive! The palate is very well made with a strong acid backbone, a good width, some nice citrusy and zesty notes all along, a soft mouthfeel and a powerful and long finish with those same citrusy and zesty notes, bringing a tiny bitter vibe to it. We had it along with a dish prepared by yours truly of squid in sauce with vegetables (oignon, red pepper bell, zucchini, carrots and garlic), fish sauce and soy sauce and this was a great pairing. Very good one! — 2 years ago

Botanica

Citrusdal Mountain Chenin Blanc 2019

Cheers to old-vine Chenin Blanc from South Africa! 🇿🇦 In South Africa, Chenin Blanc also goes by the name “Steen.”

It’s such a versatile grape and wine, capable of producing beautiful sweet, dry, still, and sparkling wines.

This wine is still and dry. We’ve paired it with sushi and it’s a delightful duet.

The grapes for this wine were grown organically in the Citrusdal Mountain district, north of Cape Town, west of the Olifants River, on the Western Cape. The bush vines were originally planted in 1957 (old!!), contributing to an intensity and a concentration of primary aromas and flavors in the grapes.

Indeed, the nose and palate offer medium(+) aromas and flavors of ripe pear, yellow apple, white peach, vegetal, boxwood, white blossom, crushed stone, and aged cheese rind notes. Lively acidity gives it lift and balances the high alcohol and intensity of fruit.

This wine was produced by Ginny Povall, American-born proprietor and self-taught winemaker of Botanica Wines. I love the botanical images on her labels, each an homage to the flower farm on which she began her wine production journey in South Africa.

Cristal Brut Champagne Chardonnay Pinot Noir Blend 2008

Stellar. Toasted hazelnuts, lemon curd, methyl anthranilate. Super fine bubbles that take you to the still zesty ripe Meyer Lemon finish. I recall when we had a bottle of this upon release I preferred the freshness then. This has been stored in our eurocave since we bought it from the reps at a party @sigh in Sonoma (Highly recommended btw - Thanks Jayme!) Here’s to 20 more years Mia ❤️ — 2 years ago
