Sipping Fine Wine

JV btw Ch Cheval Blanc & Terrazas De Los Andes, blend of Bordeaux "First Growth" winemaking in ARG, blend of Malbec (62%) & Cab Sauv (38%), aged 15 months in oak (50% new), riper fruit, slightly more alcohol than ‘16, deep Ruby, complex aromas of berry fruits & floral spice nose. On the palate flavors, blueberry and juicy blackberry fruit with spicy herb, cacao & smoky oak. Fine soft tannins, well balanced, good acidity, long finish ending with fruit & oak. Will continue to age.

I enjoyed this wine but perhaps not quite as much as RP’s 97 points. It was a little tart to open but mellowed with air. I was expecting a higher alcohol, more straightforwardedly fruity wine given the Argentine origins. However, the winemaker is explicitly targeting a Bordeaux taste in the style of Chateau Cheval Blanc. After I read that, the taste clicked a bit more. A smooth, tasty expression of the Bordeaux style. 62% malbec, 38% cabernet. $80. Would drink again.

Coravined a glass of 2017 for curiosity. A Malbecian powerhouse. Best left in the garage for now. The dark fruits of cassis, dried plums, luxardo cherries dominate. Subtle earth mixes with red man tobacco chew are the wines foundation. The tannins are a bit sharp but lack depth. I think this is needs another 5 years before piercing another full bottle.

Not bad, I suspect I drank too cold and didn’t allow it to breath.
