Racy and tight. Very closed at first, then opened up just enough to enjoy classic Syrah. Nose and taste were straightforward blue and dark fruit. After an hour petrol notes appeared that overpowered the wine and dominated the finish.

Sipping Fine Wine

Medium Ruby with developing aromas of black and red fruits with cedar, floral and spice. On the palate flavors of tart raspberry, blackberry and cedar with smoke and tobacco notes. Generous acidity on fine grippy tannins with a long finish ending with fruit and oak. Age this beauty for a while. Nice!

Had my doubts about this and was happily proven wrong. More elegant than I thought even at a young age.

Sophisticated nose of bacon fat, pipe smoke, ground espresso, hazelnut, blueberry, and bramble berry pie. Leather, tar, and tobacco too. Layered and perfectly ripe.Palate hits with pronounced blue and black fruits accented by pepper and clove. Vanilla bean and organic earth flavors too. Tannins are moderate and playfully bounce off a food minded acidity. This is drinking wonderfully now, so much that it’s hard to justify aging. Great finish depth and length. Drink or hold. This far over delivered on complexity for the price point!

Perfect balance. Still tight, but with a solid finish. Wait.

On the list, this was supposed to be the 2011 d’Ampuis, but they apparently just turned over their list. This is still very good, albeit a bit too young - needs a lot more air and/or a few more years in the bottle. Still has that classic roasted meat nose of a Cote-Rotie - just a bit too closed right now.

The last wine standing of another great trip through LA. A bit of a roller coaster in my journey, this bottle presented a similar situation. Upon setting the screw, the entire, intact cork pushed straight into the bottle. This may have been a sign of excessive exposure to oxygen, however maybe it just brought a little more age to to this relatively young wine. Heavy fur and peppery potpourri slowly opened to increasingly softening dusty gunpowdery tannins and a seedy blackberry jam. Not the kind you see anywhere else in the world. The earth matches the fruit in perfect balance while restraining itself as if not to overwhelm you or offend. A big, powerful wine indeed, but a power than comes from within, a power based on its subtleties and it's grace like a seasoned swordsman.

I expected to be intrigued by this wine, but not necessarily enjoy drinking it. I was so wrong. The initial impression brought plenty of smoke, meat, wet wool, gun powder and lots of potpourri. But just a short time later you were presented with a wine of both intrigue and enveloping deliciousness. Black fruits carry the day - currant paste, plum and blackberry - with mulled winter spices also playing their part (cinnamon, nutmeg and cardamom). The tannins are a silky bath of soft, black earth, with acidity that carries the wine while hiding in the background. Complexity and approachability make this old world stunner a great find for someone stuck in their new world rut.
