Tenuta San Guido
Bolgheri Sassicaia Cabernet Sauvignon Cabernet Franc
Opened up quickly with a decant. Dark ruby color with some orange tint. Nice aged aromas of pipe tobacco, violets, leather, black currant.
Still has plenty of structure and tannic backbone.

Muted nose of twig and tight cherry, cranberry and allspice. Dense black, ripe and dried cherry with leather cedar and clove, a dried blackberry component, very clean tobacco note, rosemary, and thyme. Cascading layers of coffee, oak, raspberry.

Courtesy of the handsome and ever-generous @Scott DeBenedett. This wine was similarly a totally smooth operator, sweet red and blue fruit tempered by savory earth, leather and tobacco. Elegant wine.

Aug 31st, 2018Rich nose but unexpectedly one-dimensional palate, deep red cherry core, beautiful, feminine tartiness with a slightly clipped finish vs similar Sassicaia vintages. Very good but not great.

Jun 20th, 20182001 Sassicaia. Drank at dinner w K, Claude, and Bill T. Joined them late so the wine had a lot of time in the decanted by the time I got to it. Had that sweetness to the nose- raisins, prunes, syrup- but a roundness to it that balanced the sweet pungency. K really liked it. Was better w the steak for me. A lot of acid.

Feb 3rd, 2017Still drinking like it was just bottled. Quite enjoyable but it could have been decanted the day before.

Oct 5th, 2016This Bottle was opened at the right time. Beautiful mint, basil and tomato leaf ripped out of the glass. Tannic structure had mellowed to a slight chewiness. Oak and fruit in balance.

Sep 3rd, 20162001 Sassicaia. We should have had more patience and waited many more years to open this baby. The reason why our cellar is in Italy and untouched.
