Nice South African wine dinner Wednesday at Angelo’s Cabarita on Sydney Harbour
Eight wines served with typical South African food so pairings were important as food can be quite spicy (Kingfish Crudo, Peri Peri Chicken, Bunny Chow Lamb Curry, Boerewors, Rib Eye and Malta Pudding)
The 2019 Kanonkop Paul Sauer Bordeaux blend from Magnum was excellent as was 2021 Meerlust Bordeaux blend as well as the 2017 Kanonkop Pinotage from Magnum. Also interesting was 2007 cold fermented Nederberg Edelkeur with the pud.
Great night.

The “King of Chardonnay” Mike Grgich farms w/o pesticides and certified organic. Aged 10 months, no MLF. Medium lemon color with aromas of ripe stone & citrus fruits. On the palate flavors of apple, apricot & citrus flavors, with honeysuckle & toasty oak notes. Good balance with acidity on medium+ finish ending with mineral notes. Not your typical CA Chard! — 2 months ago

Ray Vanderhoff
Another solid vintage of this South African Bordeaux-Style red. Blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (49%), Merlot (28%), Cabernet Franc (20%) and Petite Verdot (3%). Aromas of black fruit, vanilla and dried rose petals. Flavors of cassis, blackberry, mulberry, black cherry, dried herbs and minerals. Lengthy finish and full bodied. Soft tannins and well structured. Nicely aged and quite elegant. — 4 days ago
