Montecillo Vineyard Moon Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon 2017

Opened several hours prior to service and enjoyed over the course of the following few hours. The 2017 Montecillo pours a deep ruby/purple color with a near opaque core; medium viscosity with moderate staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is developing with very pretty notes of tart, slightly underripe dark and red fruits: currants, blackberries, Montmorency cherry, raspberry, fresh leaf tobacco, bell pepper, purple flowers, graphite, earth, gentle warm spices. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ tannin and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose with a good dose of minerals. The finish is long, tart and grippy. Okay so I’ve had enough of Ketan’s wines by now to expect a certain amount of greenness. Sometimes, particularly with Vare, it’s almost offensive. However, that doesn’t seem to be the case here. It’s certainly on the more elegant end of the spectrum but there’s a lot of character, particularly with the aromatics which are not only precise but rather beguiling. A classic that just needs more time to flesh out. For sure though, this is going to be a polarizing wine for many. Drink now with extended air but better after 2027 and probably has the legs to run well past 2047. — 5 days ago

Viña Cumbrero Gran Reserva Tempranillo 2011

Deep ruby in color; black cherries, wood smoke, and cedar on the nose; medium acidity; medium acidity; medium tannins; tastes like cherries, wet gravel, and raspberries with a long finish. Jason, Nellie, and Jen say it's ok. Brian and I like it. — a year ago

Crianza Rioja Tempranillo 2020

Gran Reserva Rioja Tempranillo 2015

Bilbao Duty Free purchase

Exclusively in great vintages, this Gran Reserva reflects the elegance and classicism of the finest Rioja tradition. An extraordinarily complex and expressive wine that brims with different nuances. With at least two years' aging in French oak barrels and more than 40 months in the bottle, it is subtle and silky, with polished, velvety tannins and notes of resin and candied fruit.

Candied fruit aromas for sure... it smells like Isobel's Christmas Cake. So soft and velvety on the palate after 10 years... ripe black cherry, leather, a hint of baking spices.

Maus Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2018

Popped and poured; enjoyed over two days with consistent notes. This is my first bottle of the 2018 “Maus” which shares the same clonal material as the fruit from Montecillo but sits about 1000ft below. No formal notes. The overall impression of freshness is unassailable. At this stage, the wine is super duper primary with cassis and tobacco taking a dominant role. There seems to be some fairly good tannin management happening because the effect on the palate is moderate. Acid, on the other hand, is medium++ and there may be a touch of VA; all good though. This is a very light, elegant and natural expression of Cabernet Sauvignon that’s showing a bit green at the moment however, I feel very confident that time will help this flesh out. Patience will be rewarded. Drink from 2025-2038+. — 2 years ago
