Clos Fourtet

Saint-Émilion Red Bordeaux Blend 2008

Shay A
9.2

85 merlot/ 10 CabSauv/ 5 CabFranc

Pop and poured. Very pretty and elegant. Not a blockbuster vintage, but not a slacker in StEm. This Clos Fourtet isn’t flamboyant nor lean, but quite balanced. Deep ruby + purple in the glass, it looks as though it will be heavy and powerful, but it sports lots of potpurri, espresso, and inky black fruits aromatically all wrapped a delicate profile. Good weight on the palate. Very clean (zero Brett). This may lean slightly modern, but the tannin and herbal bite at the finish snap you back to France. Not surprisingly, the last glass was best. No rush here, but a quick dash of air opens the gates.

Chappellet

Pritchard Hill Estate Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2006

Popped and poured; no formal notes. This 2006 Chappellet “Pritchard Hill” Cabernet Sauvignon was enjoyed alongside a 2001 St. Supery “Dollarhide” and a 2005 Beaulieu Vineyard “Georges De Latour”. All three were well stored examples from the same cellar. The 2006 “Pritchard Hill” is easily the biggest wine we enjoyed on this night. Big and bold with ripe (and maybe some stewed) black and red fruits, some tobacco, leather and baking spices. Good structure. An impressive wine for lovers of the more modern style of Napa Cabernet’s yet, there is something for all because the quality of the Pritchard Hill fruit is undeniable. Drink now and over the next 5-10 years. — 2 years ago

The Standish Wine Company

The Relic Shiraz Blend 2014

2014 vintage. 3 hour decant.
3/6.5/9.5 = 19 out of 100 say 96.
High quality Barossa Shiraz with an awesome bouquet apparent as soon as it’s released from the bottle (though I always think blending Viognier is cheating in that regard). Still a strong tannin/acid structure so still not at its peak - say 5 years more at least. High alcohol content but integrated perfectly - didn’t even notice. Really pleasant long linger. Standish is an artist so you must collect and try. My next move is to try back to back with a Yarra Yering Dry Red No. 2

Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande

Pauillac Red Bordeaux Blend 1995

Dark ruby robe, showing some bricking at the rim. Nose of cedarwood, top soil notes, cassis, asian spices. Oh so good in the mouth, in spite the very tannins of the vintage. Starting to open up, will probably get even better in another 5 years or so, no rush but already very very enjoyable now. Great bottle and we loved it.

Château Léoville Barton

Saint-Julien Red Bordeaux Blend 1986

Medium garnet , medium wide garnet terracotta rim . Tobacco , sous bois , touch of ash and coffee . On the palate quite rounded but firm tannins , dark cassis , cedar , sous bois . Good acidity and medium grafite tinged finish . Overall a touch rustic in comparison to the other Leovilles , but this is drinking perfectly now , no rush however as this held up well in the glass,
so now and over the next 5-10 years

Château Cos d'Estournel

Saint-Estèphe Red Bordeaux Blend 1971

1971 vintage. Top shoulder fill. Used a Durand but fully saturated cork still required some clean up on aisle 7. Decanted and tasted after 5 minutes. Threw much much less sediment than expected. Decent color with a little browning. Tertiary nose gave way to similar flavors with it being very slightly brickish. In a holding steady phase where there is no shining light to chase after-everything is consolidated and filed away so you're tasting the interpretations of history. Instructive. 6.13.24. — 7 months ago

Château de La Tour

Clos Vougeot Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru Pinot Noir 2013

Delectable Wine
9.1

The 2013 Clos de Vougeot Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru, picked from 5 October according to Pierre Labet, has a fragrant bouquet, fresher than many other tasted, pure raspberry and wild strawberry fruit, nicely integrated oak. The palate is less rustic than many others, finely balanced, with moderate depth and just a bit of hardness on the finish that one can easily abide. Lovely, though would I cellar long-term? Probably no. (Neal Martin, Vinous, October 2023)
