L'Enclos St. Émilion Red Bordeaux Blend 1998

It is time for some Merlot on this #MerlotThursday. Let's bring Merlot back!

Dark ruby in color with a wide brick rim.

The nose is simpler than I expected right out of the bottle, but beautiful once it opens up.

Medium plus in body and elegant, with medium acidity.

Dry on the palate with nice complexity.

Showing black plums, cooked cherries, light oak, licorice, spices, chocolates, tobacco, herbs, espresso, earth, light forest floor and black pepper.

Long finish with fine grained tannins and tangy raspberries.

This Merlot based blend from Bordeaux is drinking nicely now, and feels young, especially on the nose.

Good right out of the bottle, and better with airtime. I did not decant it and left it in the bottle. I was actually worried that it will die sooner, but it still has a lot in it. Love to see that. Only after 2 hours, the nose opened up and tannins showed up.

This 26 years old is easy drinking and good by itself or with food. I had the 2010 vintage, five years ago, and I liked it better this time.

Robert Parker 94 points.

Paired nicely with a Charcuterie board of meats and cheeses.

13.5% alcohol by volume.

89 points.

$100.

Most certainly the WOTN, GdL never fails to impress. It’s classic Napa Cab through-and-through with a rich and expressive palate and a nose to die for. Looking forward to trying the 2016 due to the addition of some new clones.

@David L It was pretty darn good. I was glad several RSVPs didn’t show up last night. More GdL for those who did 🍷

Wow, a nose to die for, incredible length, no hard edges at all in this classic Barolo. However, this wine shows ripeness, is juicy and I see no reason to wait. — 9 years ago

Pauillac Red Bordeaux Blend 2015

Dit is voorlopig de laatste die we openen. 3u luchten is nodig om dit aantrekkelijk te maken. Het bal opent met kersenyoghurt in de neus. That’s a first. — 5 years ago

Die Ouwingerdreeks Skerpioen Chenin Blanc Palomino 2021

One of my all time favourites.

Last one of 2021 left in the collection. Fell in love with this wine in 2022 during a dinner at La Colombe. Great characterful wine from the west coast. You can taste it’s origin in the briny/kelp like taste with a bit of stone fruit, chamomille/jasmine and a touch of fennel/anise. Always a bit lower on the alcoho and acidityl, which makes it a great early drinker. Can’t wait to try the 2024 with 99 points.

Clos du Mesnil Brut Blanc de Blancs Champagne Chardonnay 1979

1979 Clos Du Mesnil. What do you do when you are confronted with a legendary wine? You hope it doesn’t disappoint. At Pages in Paris today, Tomo delighted us with this outstanding bottle. Medium golden hue. The nose was to die for: fresh, white flower, chalk and honeyed - alluring and forever changing in the glass while keeping its freshness. Hints of truffle wafted away within minutes. What seemed like an impossible dream of the ultimate Champagne remained intact. Fine but persistent bubbles, huge but balanced concentration with a refreshing, zesty acidity and a finish I can still taste an hour and a half after having drained the last few precious drops of this legend. Wow, wow, wow. Incredible. 100 points. Don’t be afraid to open now or in 20 years. — 8 years ago
