Domaine La Bastide St. Dominique

Château La Dominique

Grand Cru Classé St. Émilion Red Bordeaux Blend 2020

Opaque red blue. Vegetal and floral aromas with muddled blueberry. Medium plus bodied, medium plus alcohol. Blueberry emerges more prominently on the palate. Unbelievably smooth, round and well integrated. So complete. Tannins are perfect here, just enough to cut the beef tallow and provide an enjoyable finish. I can only imagine this will get even better, but why wait. This is near the top of my historical scale.

Château Grand-Pontet

Saint-Émilion Red Bordeaux Blend 2010

Lunch 🥪

K&L notes as follows, Grand Pontet is an interesting property, positioned in the neighborhood of other stars of the appellation such as Châteaux Canon, Beau-Séjour-Bécot and Clos Fourtet. It is, however, a small estate, a mere 14 hectares, and its prices are much better than some of its more prestigious neighbors. In 1980 it was purchased by Gerard and Dominique Bécot, owners of the neighboring Beau-Séjour-Bécot. They have applied the same high standards to both Châteaux in their possession, and their winemaking team crafts Grand Pontet alongside the Beau-Séjour-Bécot wines. Recently purchased in 2021 by Domaines Clarence Dillon (Haut-Brion, La Mission Haut-Brion, et al.), the property was combined with and incorporated into Château Quintus. Full-bodied and luscious, this Grand Pontet is laden with ripe blackberry fruits, savory tobacco, licorice notes, and ripe, softened tannins. It’s seamless and bold, not shy. It’s going to require something decadent to pair with, such as filet mignon or some other black-tie dish with plenty of flavor and rich umami presence.

En Remilly Saint-Aubin 1er Cru Chardonnay 2018

Excellent “natural” st Aubin that holds up to a classic palette. More classic than their Pinot noir. Really elegant and lovely. — 3 years ago

Secrets De Pignan Châteauneuf-du-Pape Grenache 2017

2017: Well-rated, very good CDP that features darker stewed fruit flavors and a good amount of port and earth nuances. While it suffers a typical CDP lack of acidity and vibrancy at this stage the fruit concentration makes this an above-average bottling and complements the growing complexity. Good value at $52 (VR). — 6 months ago

Grande Cuvée Vieilles Vignes Bonnes-Mares Pinot Noir 2003

Nice color. Fruit forward nose. Notes of raspberries, rhubarb, some oak, some spice and a little damp dark soil. Nice mouth feel, with no stringent tan in or acidity. Decent finish. Has a little complexity but is missing that oomph in the mid-palate. Pretty decent for the vintage. — 2 years ago

Saint-Émilion Red Bordeaux Blend 2015

Beautiful nose, ripe plums and blackcherry core, with cranberry and tart cherry. Subtle eucalyptus, tobacco, and olive tapenade. Roses. Racy minerality. Palate delivers ripe blackrasberry pie, clove, cedar box and cranberry. Persistent with balance and freshness. 50% Cabernet franc, 45% merlot, 5% Malbec. Grown on blue clay soils, with famous neighbors of Chevalier Blanc and La Dominique. Drink with short decant or hold. — 2 years ago
