When in Argentina drink…..rose? Syrah based rose from the extreme North of Argentina, in Juyjuy, just south of Bolivia & Paraguay. At 15.1% abv a “ light” red. Fresh cut wild strawberries soaked in rum, & sure, runs a bit hot but who’s counting when drinking rose in BA. Apparently some young, brave guns making wine this far north & it’s delicious. Enough balance to keep things lip smacking. — 3 years ago

Garnet-tiled, murky, deep dress.Clos de Gat is an area of Judea in Israel. With two hours of aeration, the primary notes, generous very ripe and animal fruits mix well with the notes of aging and spices. We are not far from a Cornas or other wine from the North Rhône with the intensity of the Israeli sun. The notes of evolution go perfectly with the bouquet.

Quality far surpasses price. — 7 years ago
From the recently revived viticultural area of Faro in the north eastern tip of Sicily near Messina and not far from Mt Etna. Light to mid crimson in colour. Earthy savoury mineral notes with smoky red cherry. Light to medium bodied palate with a skinnsy note. A blend of the 2 Nerellos of Etna fame plus Nocera and Nero d’Avola - Sicily in a bottle! Not as wow as when I had it in Sicily but still impressive. — 8 years ago
my fave white so far — 9 years ago
It's a dark wine, dark in color, dark in aromas and dark in flavors. The nose offers abundant blackberry and black raspberry notes with an earthy base. There is an element of smoke at the top of the glass. The palate is deep and rich, dark fruit joined with a sense of black olives and tea. It leans toward savory, but not without taking the fruit with it. The wine finishes with a little raspberry tartness and a lot of berries that stay for a medium length. It's not too much of a bruiser as far as Pinot goes, rather elegant. Let your kitchen staff know you’d like a grilled pork chop for dinner. — 9 years ago
2017 far better than anything after 2021! — 6 months ago
Guess what it’s Chardonnay! If you couldn’t get that then maybe switch to spirits. Very sulphitic in character both on the nose and palate. When you only really drink natural wines this old school wine isn’t what you want any more. The decanter still had a glass in it at the end of the night. — a year ago
Cold climate burgundy from far north Irancy. Quiet but very fresh on first taste, strong roses and violets. Day two acid mellowed and gave way to amarena cherries. Great value if you’ve got the time to let her breathe! — 4 years ago
Still quite austere, this Latour-Mattillac from the superstar 2010 vintage is a dark, brooding and full-blooded wine from Pessac-Léognan that will be far greater in 5/10+ years’ time. Better on the second day than the first (despite a two hour decant), it showed the traditional medley of dark fruit, cassis, wet gravel and grip, but with a profile more similar to its neighbours further north than what one may consider ‘typical’ Graves. But make no mistake: this is an exceptional Bordeaux worthy of long-term cellaring, and one with a hence attractive price tag. — 6 years ago
Brilliant ruby in the glass with thin edges. An absolutely stunning nose of bright red fruits, cherry cola, a dash of cinnamon, fresh herbs, and just the faintest hint of funk. I really don’t want to stop smelling this sexy thing but I should taste it. Even though I mention that funk, this is definitely far more on the elegant and sensual side of Pinot. On the palate there’s plenty to love. Lush fruit is complimented by just the right amount of spice and mild oak. Dark chocolate and herbs take you right on to the long finish of dark berries. Simply an outstanding Pinot Noir and one I want more of. — 6 years ago

Bartlett Pear eau de vie. (Lot PB-08)
This will be my initial experience with this bottle after passing it in my local shop numerous times and pondering the eventual purchase.
Ok... Just like everything else made under the roof at St. George's, this is crazy juice, nose is intense peeled pear skin and the palate has the truest expression of pear I've ever known. All this is distinctly Bartlett Pear, no question. Wow, perfect close to the evening. — 8 years ago

The first of my small tranche of 2019 Cuvée Reservée’s and I figured it would be fun to share with the Tasting Group. Popped and poured and presented double-blind. The wine pours a translucent, deep ruby with magenta rim, near opaque core, medium+ viscosity. On the nose, the wine was clean with macerated raspberry, cranberry, and pomegranate fruits. There were purple flowers, some black pepper and rocky minerality along with a slightly gamey note which was quite charming. Both the fruit and non-fruit characteristics were confirmed on the palate. The wine finishes dry with medium+ tannin and medium+ acid. There’s a compelling sense of power and energy in this wine. Everyone was in the Rhône but most were in the North; from Saint Joseph to Cornas, citing that they believed this was Syrah. However, two in the group called Châteauneuf du Pape and one actually called producer (!!) but missed on vintage (2016). Universally, the wine was fawned over and the dude who called Pagaü thought he actually favored the 2019 over the 2016 he had a while back. While I’m not sure I would go that far, the 2019 is truly quite stunning already and seems to have the guts to see a very long and wonderful life ahead. These are currently enjoying their customary early drinking window however, that window will likely close within a year or so and then I could see this shutting down pretty hard until 2025 — 4 years ago
Reached pretty far back in the cellar for this one. Pax Mahl was making some terrific wines out of his eponymous winery (Obsidian and Griffin’s Lair were my favorites), until some sort of flare-up between him and Joe Donelan eventually resulted in them splitting the vineyard accesses between them and shutting down the winery. After 15 years, this wine is still going strong. Great example of a cooler climate north coast syrah. — 5 years ago

Very dry. Excellent wine. Best with food. — 7 years ago
I so rarely encounter a great Gewürztraminer from outside Alsace, and when I do, it’s most likely from the Anderson Valley. This Phillips Hill bottling is no exception. Striking in its aromatic intensity - dried ginger, rose water, thyme, pine sap, crushed stones, and white pepper - the wine is vinified nearly bone dry, resulting in a taut, lean structure that moves with spritely dynamism. The floral and spice tones meet fruitier flavors on the palate - white peach and lemon soda. A far cry from the California Chardonnays and Sauvignon Blancs that dominate the Golden State’s white wine scene. — 8 years ago
I helped to make this wine withe Melissa Moravec & Francis Mahoney. The Wine Spectator gave this wine 92 points in 1988. Still 92 points as far as I am concerned. Middle of pack of the six 1986 PN. Not my last bottle. YEAH!!!! — 9 years ago
