Henschke

Peggy's Hill Eden Valley Riesling 2022

I believe this is my first time with a Henschke white. Intense citrusy nose along with florals and undertones of petro (nothing even close to a Grosset). A very zesty palate of some orchard fruit and plenty of acid. A moderate finish that I expect will extend once things better integrate. I assume like many Australian rieslings this will age , Is that a valid statement @Bob McDonald ? — 2 years ago

@Ira Schwartz Over the weekend I tasted the full range of Henschke cuvées with Stephen and Pru Henschke and a group of wine lovers. Julius is their top Riesling from the Eden Valley and then Peggy’s. Both could easily age 10 plus years. Some fruit for Peggy’s is sourced from other growers. Eden Valley (home of Hill of Grace and Mount Edelstone) is one of the best districts for Riesling in Australia.

Surprised by the quality and varietal signatures of this NAPA Riesling! Could easily confuse it for a good dry German Riesling. That oily petro white stone flowers and complexity carrying over to a good balanced palate and finish. Impressed. — 5 years ago

St. Andrews

Single Vineyard Riesling 2015

Mid straw yellow in colour. After 10 years still no sign of TDN. Aromas of lime and talc. Ken Helm of Helm wines in the Canberra district would say these are well handled Riesling grapes from a cool growing season where no petro chemical notes have developed. He believes kero/petrol aromas are a wine fault and caused by sunburnt grapes. On the palate lime flavours, a touch of honey and finishes with a slight saline note. Fresh and crisp even in its old age. Proves again that the Clare Valley is perfect for Riesling. Delectable: Taylor’s is the producer. — 8 months ago

Cuvée Frédéric Emile Alsace Riesling 2010

Mid gold in colour. Aromatics of yellow peach and honeyed notes. No traces of petro chemical. Medium plus intensity of stone fruit and mineral on the palate. Great depth. One of the top Rieslings in Alsace and showing it in spades. A beautiful Riesling and probably at its peak. Will stay on this plateau through the 2020’s. Interestingly about 25% went through malolactic so this is a different style from the usual Cuvée Frederic Emile. Very fresh for a 14 year old Riesling but remaining fleshy and M plus bodied. — 2 years ago

Last of three bottles for Leila’s friends Deb/Evan who have such EtOH tolerance and desire! 7/11/22 late after dinner drink. A classic Riesling nose of slate petro white fruits goodness with complex acidic balance and long finish. Too bad I only had a taste. May be only bottle. — 4 years ago

Great Western Riesling 2016

Aromas of talc, honeysuckle, lime and kaffir leaf (should go well with a curry). No Kero. Palate is almost off dry - lime, under ripe peach, touch of pear, low acid - drinking beautifully. Amazing value for $26. Had another bottle on the 4th May 2023 with consistent notes - off dry with a ripe mandarin note detected, low acid. Another bottle on 8th December 2023. TDN petro chemical aromas starting to develop. Almost an off dry style with a touch of residual sweetness. Still enough cleansing citric acid to prevent things becoming blowsy. — 5 years ago

Château de Fargues

Sauternes Sémillon-Sauvignon Blanc Blend 2006

Initial aromas of apricot and a petro chemical smell (in a good way) and orange peel. Dubbed somewhat cruelly “Poor mans d’Yquem”. A delicious Sauternes from a producer who does not get a lot of publicity. With time it opened up with a palate of profound intensity showing Apricots, Cumquat jam, burnt toffee, and barley sugar. One of the 1001 wines to drink before you die. — 5 years ago

Great Southern Riesling 2009

Aromatics of Talc, white flowers a little peach and grapefruit. On the palate citrus and peach with diminishing acid. Just a fabulous mature Riesling with just a hint of petro chemical developing in the form of paraffin. It stamps the Great Southern in Western Australia as one of the premium Riesling districts in Australia. One of the 1001 wines and deserves to be. James Halliday wrote “year in, year out, one of Australia’s best Rieslings”. — 5 years ago
