Didier Dagueneau

Vin de France Sauvignon Blanc XXI

Unique experience. Far more exuberant than what the vintage would suggest, it jumped out of the glass with a bouquet I would not normally associate with wine. He gave me a strong reminder of men’s cologne “eau de lierre” (it jumped right out because I used to wear it.) which, according to the manufacturer means galbanum, cyclamene and rosewood. Hidden behind the solemn wood and dark flowers there’s a green core of fresh pyrazenes that lifts up the darkness on the palate and gives way to a lingering acidity — 4 months ago

Solemn Cellars

Walla Walla Valley Sangiovese 2015

Delicious! Shows more Walla Walla character than Sangiovese character, though. Fair amount of new oak on the nose with ripe, juicy blackberry fruit. In the mouth the savory, fire pit, stony aromas are lovely. Long finish. — 6 years ago

Robert Michel

Cuvée des Côteaux Cornas Syrah 2006

Robert Michel he is something of an institution when it comes to Cornas and its wines. Actually 2006 it's been his last vintage before retirement, even though he has continued to help and give advice to the young and gifted winemaker Guillaume Gilles. Cuvée des Coteaux here it comes from two parcels: Les Chaillots and Le Quartier de Renard. Michel used to make severe, uncompromised, traditionally austere and long-lived wines. Manual harvest, gentle fermentation with the entire stems, wine ageing in larger sized demi-muid cask. A pity that such a majestic vigneron doesn't make such one-shot wines any more. Though, what a patriarchal wine here we've got: power and delicacy at the same time in this 2006; purity, unsophisticated class is all I love in those kind of wines. Well, what else? Dionysus bless Michel and his solemn beverage in time and in eternity. — 9 years ago

Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé

Bonnes Mares Grand Cru Pinot Noir 2011

Quite deep ruby , pink ruby rim . Quite tight and mineral , meaty note on the nose . Slightly green perhaps but with mineral , darker fruit , blackcurrant , kirsch , dark cherry. A little closed and solemn . A little woody on the palate first, with iris and dark cherry, cassis and blackberry notes . Quite firm tannins , bright acidity , medium length . This probably needs more time but is quite a difficult wine at present , serious and aloof , quite Bonnes Mares I suppose . Can be drunk now but would benefit from another 3-4 years and will last well a further 5-10. — 5 months ago

Château de la Gardine

Cuvée des Generations Gaston Philippe Châteauneuf-du-Pape Red Rhone Blend 1995

Unbelievable!
Reminds me of Don Maximiano, but much better.

Solid solemn nose, slightly acidic with deep notes.
Excellent pairing with the succulent Argentinian grill. Perfecto!

Riserva Grandi Annate Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Sangiovese Blend 2007

Here i go again on another rant about how unappreciated Vino Nobile is. It is also my solemn belief that the closer it is produced to Montepulciano the better it gets. Ergo this bottle gets top marks. — 9 years ago

Morgon Gamay 2014

So-five years in, the cherry pop has worn off & it’s a more solemn, damp earth, dark red fruits affair: tertiary flavors. I have to say In not crazy about drinking cru Beaujolais w age as it seems to defeat the purpose of Beaujolais— the vibrancy & bounce in the palate has moved on. That said, will keep trying. — 6 years ago
