The Hairy Arm

d'Arenberg

The Dead Arm McLaren Vale Shiraz 2017

Just everything you want in a big, fat Australian Shiraz. Big, bright fruit - cherries, cranberries, raspberries - jumps out at first, but later you enjoy some darker, stewed fruit flavors - plum and even tomatoes. Super long finish. Drinking this 2017 in December 2024 and it is perfectly balanced. Just the right amount of tannins and acid to balance the immense fruit bomb. Just great. — a month ago

Damaschito Aglianico del Vulture 2013

Dried violets blue plums moody...moods. Agianico is a dark haired vixen who winks at you then ever so lightly punches your arm, laughing. Dark wine sarcastic soul. Balsamic vinegar and prunes. Tannic thunder kept in check. By ripe and dried fruits sturdy and whimsically profound. — 6 years ago

Pisano

Río de Los Pájaros Reserve Progreso Torrontés 2020

Star bright yellow. Enticing nose of citrus rind and waxy marzipan. Zingy firm acidity from entry to finish wrapped in medium full body and layers of lemon, lemon rind, lemongrass, and new white flowers. That traditional “pop” of lemon in the finish tells me that the 2020 vintage is back from the watery depths that 2019 wrought. Seafood (white flesh fish especially), salads, poached chicken, soft cheeses, or even light cream sauces will shine in combination. It would make a refreshing sipper on a moderately arm day as well. Drink now through 2022. — 4 years ago

Casot Barbaresco Nebbiolo 2014

Initially has the spice of a Latin lover feeding you fresh fruit. Then is followed by a finish as long as an arm-wrestling match between two teenage kids. ❤️🇮🇹 — 7 years ago

La Braccesca (Antinori)

Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Sangiovese Blend 2018

Dark ruby with near black core. Black raspberry, black cranberry, and ash lead the abundant nose. Medium full palate echoes the nose adding firm tannins from entry and hints of berry compote and birch. Finish is long and dark. Antinori’s Nobile arm has a rich history and under their watch is producing as expected. A fine expression of Tuscany’s Duke that’s ready for hearty meat dishes now, but can lay down for a decade or so. Drink now through 2030. — 3 years ago

Pommery

Louis Pommery Brut Methode Champenoise

Star bright straw gold with fine bubbles and persistent white mousse. Green apple tart on the nose. Echoed on the bright palate which adds a slight citrusy note. Finish is long and toasty. A wonderful and well-priced offering from the American arm of Pommery house. Enjoy with everyday fare and save the god stuff for “special” times. — 6 years ago
