Visceral and punchy. Bright lemon, struck matches, oyster shells. Thrilling acidity and great fruit. Young but gorgeous — 2 years ago

Partida Creus

CX Penedès Cartoixa Vermell

Sat afternoon at home. Aromatic, tropical fruit nose. Very fresh on the palate, with satisfying tartness that accentuates how fresh it is. Slight salinity that gives it additional complexity.

The CX of Partida Creus is a real bombshell of freshness, a nose that plays on notes of white fruits, citrus, and aromatic herbs. Tart and funky on the palate, with a long finish. A super rare and super good wine.

Partida Creus is the project of two Italians now in residence in the Tarragona region of Catalonia, just south of Barcelona. The idea of the project was to work with historical, often overlooked local varietals that in many cases were not recognised by the D.O. of the area: Penedès. Massimo and Antonella strategically went about buying up small plots of abandoned vineyards dotted around the area where mostly unknown varietals such as Garrut, Vinyater, Samsó and Queixal de Llop grew. They sought to revitalise the vines and work out the best expression for these old varetals, working without chemicals in the vineyard and without selected yeasts or any other additions in the cellar. They make an impressively dizzying number of different wines, all of which are unified by a very distinctive house style - raw, visceral and pungent reds, and salty, turbid, expressive whites. As a couple they have an insatiable energy that really comes through in the wine.

Cave de Turkheim

Brand Alsace Grand Cru Pinot Gris 2012

On the nose, the forward aromas are sweet-honey and brown sugar. On the palate, the acidity balances it all off with ripe lime zest and granite/petrol. Its thinner and shorter than you’d want it to be, but it also has a visceral personality with an oily slipperiness that really rounds it back into solid form. — 5 years ago

Domaine de la Choupette

Comme Dessus Santenay Pinot Noir 2020

Dusty grape and dried blackberry and raspberry are tempered by sunny mushroom in the form of chanterelle and porcini. Soy and sorghum. Conversely, the animal feed nature of the nose is subverted by resurgent fruit that mirrors dried plums bordering prune before slamming into a spongy mushroom flesh. Meatiness abounds, but doesn’t slice thickly. Solid despite. Bigly showing fruit tannin visceral-ity.

Dalla Valle Vineyards

Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 1995

When it comes to Napa Cabernet, there are few and very far between that evoke a visceral emotional response. Dalla Valle is consistently one of those styles. At age 25, this wine was exceptional in its elegance and depth. Excellent balance with fresh dark cherry, tobacco, menthol and some barnyard character. — 5 years ago

Le Macioche Riserva Brunello di Montalcino Sangiovese 2006

Just getting around to opening! A visceral experience with wax top keepig everything snug. Very hot out of the gate— giving some air but loving all the fruit wafting out the side. — 6 years ago

No Curfew

California Pinot Noir 2019

Musky stonefruit on the nose. A touch of richer tannins approaches then leaves.
Immediate structure and visceral complexity hinting towards tobacco, campfire smoke, ash, dried fruits.
There is an herbal wash on the medium structured finish.

Paired with Chinese food.

Anchorage Brewing Company

Darkest Hour Imperial Stout

Black as starless space, mostly headless, with dark brown bubbling at the neck. Deep espresso turns darkest chocolate, charred cinnamon and dark caramel, licorice, and dark brittle. Savory, charred chocolate and bittersweet arabica. Deep treacle, licorice echo, with brandy notes sporting chocolate haloes. Intense, visceral, and unforgettable.
