Wine Situation Final Five (Now With Drunk Dialing!)

The Wine Situation hosts everyone from winemakers to writers to find out what a person’s situation is…with wine. It’s the solo season with host Ellen Clifford, but listen in with a glass, and nobody is drinking alone! In lieu of guests, at the end of every action packed episode Ellen is phoning a friend with her Final Five questions. This week Ellen talks to actor and comedian Beth Burnham! Check out the full episode here THE FINAL FIVE (Ever so slightly edited for length!): QUESTION ONE Ellen: What are you drinking lately? Or eating? Beth: A couple of weeks ago I went to a Pitfire Pizza in North Hollywood. They have this one pizza called The Honeybear Pizza. It has bee pollen and honey, and oh my god it’s so good. And they have rosé there that’s a really good rosé, so I’ve been very into that combination. And when I’m really into a food, I’ll eat it every day for months. QUESTION TWO Ellen: Love that. Question number two, which you actually just gave me one example, but do you have either a favorite or unusual pairing you’ve enjoyed? Any kind of food, any kind of drink. Beth: Have you been to Scum and Villainy? Ellen: That’s the Star Wars bar, right? Beth: Yes, the Star Wars bar. They have such good fried food and really good fruity little cocktails. I love a good strong fruity but smooth, but with deep-fried food. Like fried mini corndogs. QUESTION THREE Ellen: Question number three is in reference to one of your most popular characters…so I’m curious, after a long day of checking up on her son at Christian college, what does Christian College Mom drink? Beth: She probably drinks something that melts the pain away. Maybe like a deep red—she seems to be like a red wine lady with—what’s an old person drink? Ellen: Does she like box wine, do you think? Beth: Oh yes, she’s a box wine girl. Like you can taste the metallic. QUESTION FOUR Ellen: That’ll melt the pain away. Question number four is, do you have things you drink that are not of the boozy persuasion? Beth: I love those Hint waters. Those little tiny waters with a splash of flavor. If I’m in a refreshing mood, I like that. If I want something to burn my throat, which is most of the time, I’ll drink a Diet Coke. If I want something to give me the effects of alcohol and tear my throat apart…Diet Coke. QUESTION FIVE Ellen: Question number five is just what’s bringing you joy these days? Beth: I love that question; I love asking people that question. My stepmom just sent me a Marc Jacobs Daisy perfume. I love material things. I feel so disgusting when it’s warm out, I just want to smell good. That’s been giving me joy. Also, watching Avatar the Last Airbender has been bringing me joy, because it’s a perfect show and amazing and I love it. I got really stoned last night and watched it, and it was a very good time. *** Follow Beth @bethburnham Check out the previous Wine Situation podcast with Casleah Herwaldt here .

Austin Hope

Paso Robles Cabernet Sauvignon 2018

A delicious, surprisingly fruity, full-bodied wine that stands up to rich meats and sauces. The deep purplish red was a sign of a great taste to come. — 3 years ago

Château Margaux

Premier Grand Cru Classé Margaux Red Bordeaux Blend 2003

Color is a deep purple garnet with a touch of bricking. Nose—bursts with blackberry, floral and cedar with green veggies, vanilla, smoky menthol, and cedar lingering. Taste—classic Bordeaux: silky, smooth and a medium plus body flavors of plum, stewed meat, minerals and smoked cedar. Lingered tastes of tobacco and subtle vanilla giving it moderate dry finish. A fantastic luscious wine to drink on a nice semi-warm Labor Day weekend evening. — 3 years ago

Great write-up, Brenda!

Maple Creek Winery

Artevino Rosé of Pinot Noir 2019

If the art style looks familiar, Maple Creek’s winemaker also makes Far Niente ‘s art. And what’s in the bottle is art too. Licorice, roses, cherries, and a hint of effervescence. — 3 years ago

Château Canon

Saint-Émilion Red Bordeaux Blend 2017

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2017 Canon bursts from the glass with expressive notions of baked black cherries, kirsch, plum preserves and black raspberries plus hints of red roses, Ceylon tea, black olives and fertile loam. Medium-bodied, the palate is wonderfully elegant and refined, with a soft, finely grained texture and seamless freshness, finishing long and mineral laced. The blend is 77% Merlot and 23% Cabernet Franc and it was aged for 18 months in French oak, 50% new. — 3 years ago

This was an excellent Chianti! Paired well with pizza and we enjoyed a glass or two just sipping before dinner. Love it. — 3 years ago

Wein-Erbhof Stein

Rosé Secco 2020

Well balanced, acidic but not overly tart, with a nice, balanced effervescence. The nose is forward, but not pungent, with a nice slight bubblyness, and notes of strawberries, raspberries, and slight mineral notes. The flavor is VERY fruit forward, with notes of strawberries, raspberry, light passion fruit, prickly pear, and sweet rhubarb, with a slight earthy almost vegetal finish. Very tasty, easy to drink, with great flavor! — 3 years ago

Château Pradeaux

Bandol Mourvedre - Cinsault Rosé Blend 2020

As goth in residence I should alert you that aside from inevitable pheromones it is intellectual wine acumen that revs my motor. Ipso facto if brains turn you on, this Bandol will seduce you with its thoughtful rigor—it has its balance and complexity fine-tuned. Then pure sensual attributes (silky rhubarb/peach Melba joy/is that a bay leaf? And omg perhaps even a hint of allspice) are all guest speakers at the symposium. This wine has deep thoughts but is perky-goth enough to dance til at least 3am. Daylight may be too much though. — 3 years ago

Handley

Anderson Valley Pinot Noir Rosé 2020

Queen Anne cherries. Red roses. And a bit of white pepper. If you have the sort of synesthesia where you taste things in visions and visions give you tastes then that’s what you would see and taste. And if you’ve not got that you’ll still probably taste that. Lovely and light. — 3 years ago
