This 2011 Petra is a varietal Sangiovese from vineyards near the town of Suvereto, on the hills of the Val di Corona. A modern winery in a region the with vine growing roots (no pun intended) going back to the Greeks and Etruscans. Even after an hour in the decanter this wine has not fully opened. In spite of that, it is still very smooth on the palate with a noticeable earthiness, leather, tobacco and quite a bit of licorice on the finish. Good and juicy acidity, yet tannins are a little tight. Will definitely benefit from a little more ageing.

Beef-a-Roni with bay leaf and poblano in a tomato sauce, dried oregano, and a crystalline, smoky incense, and a hint of turtle soup. Black cherry, something between a plum and a prune, black river pebbles, burnt strawberry jam, and beer skin. Creative depth and some winemaker influence in the cedar and tobacco that follow. But not enough to derail a beauty. #Petra #Sangiovese #Tuscany #tuscanred #italianwines #italianwinelovers #redwine #bigredwine — 7 years ago

2013 Petra Potenti Rosso Toscana IGT. 100% Cabernet from Tuscany. Lots of black fruit and still some sour cherry to add a little tartness. Some spice, leather and tobacco round out the mouth feel. Still lots of acidity and tannic structure. Easily good for another 5-6 years. Love this wine. #italianwines #tuscanwine #cabernet #italianredwine #toscana #petra #potenti #2013tuscanvintage #drinkitalianwine #italiancabernetsauvignon — 6 years ago
